U of G coach named to U of T hall of fame

Angela Orton, head coach of women's basketball at the University of Guelph, will be inducted into the University of Toronto's Sports Hall of Fame Thursday, June 3.

Orton is one of nine individuals to be honoured at a Hall of Fame dinner for their contributions to U of T's athletic programs. The U of T Sports Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 1987 and is located in the Athletic and Physical Education Centre.

Orton was a member of U of T's women's varsity basketball team from 1981 to 1986 and is a former Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) All-Canadian co-captain. She was named to four Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association All-Star teams and was on the Junior National Team and the Canadian National Team from 1983 to 1988. She helped U of T win a CIAU championship and was named MVP in 1986. She was U of T's athlete of the year in 1985.

As head coach for U of G women's basketball, Orton was named the Ontario University Athletics West Division Basketball Coach of the Year in 1999 after coaching her team to a league record of 11-3.
