Annual sex conference reaches age of majority; adult relationships to be explored

The 21st annual Guelph Conference and Training Institute on Sexuality runs June 7-16 at the University of Guelph. The theme of this year's conference is "Sexuality: Relationships & Health, Emerging Insights, Trends & Skills."

Program highlights:

Two special sessions begin the "open" portion of the conference. Working with Transgendered Clients (a pre-conference workshop) June 14.

Sex Professionals: What Do We Do When the Hour is Up? (Keynote) June 14. According to speaker Dr. David Hingsburger, sex educators and therapists talk about sex more than they do it. A frank discussion about professional expectations and personal experience, or the danger of NOT taking your work home with you.

Concurrent workshop sessions June 15-16 will examine: Affairs: Truth and Consequences. Prof. Emeritus Claude Guldner discusses types of affairs, the motivations behind affairs, impact on relationships, and forgiveness and healing.

Sex May Be Wasted on the Young. The title of this session is shared with a book by the same name, whose co-authors will discuss aging and sexuality, and how older persons can take charge of their relationships and sexuality.

An Exploration of the Experience of Straight (Ex)Spouses of Gay Men. What happens to the wife of a gay man who "comes out"?

My Body, My Rules: The Body Esteem, Sexual Esteem Connection, featuring Maureen Kelly from Planned Parenthood of Tompkins County, Ithaca, New York.

Gay Men and Sexuality: Deconstructing the Gay Body. Experiences of gay men discussing body image and sexuality across the lifespan.

Myths and Misconceptions about Women and Aging. A creative exploration of the upside of women and aging.

Hot Topics in Sexual Pharmacology: The New "Morning After" Pill. Led by Dr. Sharon L. Camp, Founding Chair of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project, Washington, D.C. Also: Depo-Provera: The New Contraceptive of Choice?

Women's Sex Toys 101: An Introduction to Playfulness and Sexuality. Led by Carlyle Jansen of "Good For Her," in Toronto.

Bisexuality: Research Overview and Clinical Implications. Will explore the experiences of bisexual men and women; how they relate to the gay/lesbian and heterosexual communities; HIV prevention. Dr. Ted Myers, University of Toronto, Dr. Karol Steinhouse, Ryerson Polytechnic University and Dr. Bill Wedin, Director, Bisexual Information and Counselling Centre, New York City.
