Fall convocation honours biologist, scholar

The world's leading figure in the field of wild primate biology and an expert on Canadian nationalism will be honoured during the University of Guelph's fall convocation Oct. 19-21 in War Memorial Hall. Some 600 students will graduate during three ceremonies.

Jane Goodall, a renowned biologist who has studied and protected wild chimpanzees for more than 40 years, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. during the ceremony for the College of Biological Science, College of Physical and Engineering Science and the Ontario Veterinary College.

Peter Russell, an expert on the Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during the College of Social and Human Sciences ceremony Monday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

The College of Arts and the Ontario Agricultural College will hold convocation Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Professor Donna Palmateer Pennee of the School of Literatures and Performance Studies in English will address graduates.

Goodall has done groundbreaking work into the life and sociobiology of chimpanzees and other primates. She is founder of the Gombe Research Centre and was instrumental in the establishment of the Jane Goodall Institute, a non-profit organization for wildlife research, education and conservation. Goodall received a Ph.D in ethology from Cambridge University and holds seven honorary degrees from North American universities.

Russell, University Professor at the University of Toronto, has done extensive research on the Constitution and Canadian nationalism. A Rhodes Scholar from Ontario, he has held academic appointments at universities around the world, has served on numerous government commissions, including Royal Commissions on the RCMP and Aboriginal Peoples and has chaired the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee of Ontario. Russell is president of the Canadian Political Science Association and the Canadian Law & Society Association. He is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
