U of G celebrates Homecoming Sept. 20 and 21

The University of Guelph’s annual Homecoming celebration will be held Sept. 20 and 21, with the football Gryphons hosting the Ottawa GeeGees at Alumni Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m.

The weekend begins Friday night with the Gryphon Hall of Fame Dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Athletics Centre. Two coaches, five former U of G athletes and the 1977 rowing team will be honoured at the induction ceremony. Robert Stallman and Tom Mooney will be inducted as builders. Stallman coached swimming and diving from 1966 to 1975. Mooney coached the basketball, football and wrestling teams from 1956 to 1960.

Alumni athletes receiving the honour are Michael Hawkes, who competed in diving, swimming and water polo from 1969 to 1972 and was the 1973 diving coach; Mel Laforme, who competed in football, rowing and wrestling from 1974 to 1979 and was a member of the national and Olympic rowing teams; Dan Wicklum, who played football at Guelph from 1984 to 1987 and became a Grey Cup champion in 1988; Kathy Cameron, who competed in track and cross-country for Guelph from 1985 to 1989 and was two-time national champion; and Alan Claremont, who competed in track and cross-country from 1955 to 1958.

All alumni are invited to a continental breakfast Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Alumni House, to be followed by the annual swim meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Athletics Centre. The annual Glory Bowl, featuring alumni Gryphon football players, will take place at 10 a.m. at Alumni Stadium, followed by a luncheon for former players, coaches and friends of Guelph football.

At noon on Saturday, all U of G alumni and friends are invited to join the classes of 2000, 2001 and 2002 for a complimentary lunch at the second annual Chili-Fest at Alumni House. The Wellness Centre will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Powell Building, and the day wraps up with a Homecoming Pub from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Bullring.
