Horse award show to benefit equine research at U of G

Bryan Adams, Bo Derek and William Shatner will be among the first recipients of the Heroes of the Horse Awards being presented Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Stratford Festival Theatre. The fundraising event will be hosted by renowned Stratford actress Lucy Peacock with proceeds going to horse research at the University of Guelph and the Equine Research Centre at the university.

The evening will honour contributions that have been made in the name of the horse throughout the cultural landscape.

Award recipients include:

• Philanthropy: Shatner for spearheading "The Hollywood Charity Horse Show"
• Medicine: The Ontario Veterinary College for world leadership in equine veterinary medicine
• Commerce: David Willmot for leadership in Canadian horse racing
• Literature: Sean O'Huigin for his book of children's poetry, The Ghost Horse of the Mounties
• Film: Dreamworks SKG for the motion picture Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
• Music: Bryan Adams for music from the motion picture Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
• Sport: Ian Millar for top Canadian equestrian
• Popular Culture: Bo Derek for her book Riding Lessons

OVC dean Alan Meek will accept the medicine award on behalf of the college.
