HTM school names new director

The University of Guelph has named a new director for its School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Marion Joppe, currently at Ryerson University, will join the School May 1. She has been teaching and working in the hospitality, tourism and lodging industry for more than 20 years. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo and received her master’s and doctorate from the Université de Droit, d'Économie et des Sciences d'Aix-Marseille III in France. Joppe has also held senior positions in tourism with the provincial government, financial institutions and tour operators.

“Marion has a proven track record and is well-established and recognized in the Canadian hospitality and tourism industry as a leader, consensus builder, facilitator and manager,” said John Walsh, associate dean of the Faculty of Management. “She brings to the School a compelling vision that builds on our established teaching capability and industry linkages, and will further strengthen our research and the growth of our graduate and management development programs.”

Joppe has received many distinguished awards, including the Ontario Hostelry Institute/ AMEX Canada Professional Development Award and the Ontario Accommodation Association Butler Award for outstanding contributions to Ontario’s accommodation industry. She was also nominated for Ryerson’s Professor of the Year award in 2001 and 2002.

Guelph’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, founded more than 30 years ago, recently added a second undergraduate major in Tourism Management and expanded its MBA (hospitality and tourism) program -- the only one in Canada -- in both a residential and distance format. The School is known for its outstanding hospitality and tourism management education in Canada and is among the top tier of internationally recognized schools in North America.
