Men's basketball team wins silver medal at CIS championships

The University of Guelph men's basketball team won the silver medal at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) basketball championships in Halifax, losing to Carleton University 57-54 in today's final game.

This was the first time in six years that the Guelph Gryphons competed in the nationals. The team was ranked 7th at the tournament, with the Carleton Ravens being ranked No. 1. The Ravens were also the top-ranked team all season, losing only once.

"In our eyes, our players are champions," President Mordechai Rozanski said of the Gryphons' second-place finish. Rozanski, who travelled to Halifax for the tournament, added "We are very proud of all of the players and coaches. The entire athletic staff did a terrific job, along with all of the alumni and friends who came out to support the team."

The Gryphons defeated the No. 3 ranked Alberta Golden Bears, the defending champions, on Saturday to advance to the finals. The team also defeated the No. 2 ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Friday.

The Gryphons entered the CIS tournament as the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division champions.
