Aug. 21 power situation update from President Alastair Summerlee

I am writing to update members of the community on the University's progress in dealing with problems that resulted from last week's power outage.

First, let me thank the people, once again, who have worked tirelessly to deal with the issues we have encountered and who have found ways to conserve power while proceeding with necessary activities. Second, let me also thank everyone for their individual and collective efforts in climbing stairs, working with little light and varying temperatures to help the University and the community cope with limited power.

At this time, we are not expecting further significant disruptions in power. As the province continues to urge people to refrain from using air conditioners and other big electrical appliances, please continue to turn off computers, photocopy machines, lights and other non-essential power sources when not in use.

Computing and Communications Services (CCS) successfully installed a temporary power supply to protect the computing system. We will now proceed with the original plan to upgrade the central computer room. As a result, computing services will be interrupted across campus from 10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, to 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26. Also to accommodate this upgrade, all power to the Animal Science building will be shut down from midnight to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Several summer programs were disrupted as a result of the power outage. I would like to thank participants and their parents for their patience and co-operation. You will be contacted shortly regarding compensation for lost activities.

The University will continue to find ways to provide support to the research community for work that was impacted by the power outage. As soon as possible, researchers will receive a schedule for the flushing of de-ionized water and other maintenance activities that might have been delayed.

Subject to provincial directions, the University is preparing to provide normal service by next week. Your continued patience, co-operation and understanding are greatly appreciated.
