U of G celebrates Homecoming Sept. 26 and 27

The University of Guelph's annual Homecoming celebration will be held Sept. 26 and 27, with the football Gryphons hosting the Queen's University Gaels at Alumni Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m.

The weekend begins Friday night with the Gryphon Hall of Fame dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Athletics Centre. Five former U of G athletes, a former basketball official and the 1966 women's ice hockey team will be honoured at the induction ceremony.

Alumni athletes receiving the honour are Stuart Miller, a two-time soccer team captain, leading scorer in 1978 and 1980 and league MVP and CIAU All-Canadian in 1980; Avril Peaker, a swimmer named the 1980 Female Rookie of the Year who set school records in the 50-, 100- and 200-metre freestyle events in 1981; Steve Perkovic, a former hockey team captain who was selected as the team's MVP, a CIAU All-Canadian and U of G's Athlete of the Year; Mike Shoemaker, a former football quarterback who set eight school records and four OUA records in both 1988 and 1989; and Bill Weber, a former football quarterback who brought the Gryphons to the OQAA title in 1955 and 1958. Ron Foxcroft, the only Canadian basketball referee to have officiated in the NCAA — a position he held from 1963 to 1999 — will receive the Award of Merit.

The annual swim meet will be held Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m. at the Athletics Centre. The Glory Bowl, featuring alumni Gryphon football players, begins at 10 a.m. at Alumni Stadium to be followed by a luncheon for former players, coaches and friends of Guelph football.

Also on Saturday, the Macdonald Institute will hold its Centenary Award presentations and reception in the Macdonald Institute lounge at 10 a.m. The newest heritage plaque commemorating the founding of the University will be unveiled in the alumni tent in Alumni Stadium following half-time activities. The Central Student Association is hosting a concert by Sloan in the main gym of the Athletics Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $22 per person and are available at the door.

Football game tickets are $7 general, $5 for seniors and alumni, $3 for students and $1 for children under 12.
