Women’s Basketball Team Competes for OUA Title, Heading to Nationals

The University's women’s basketball team will vie for its 16th win in a row Saturday when it competes for the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) title at 1 p.m. The Gryphons will take on the east division champions, the University of Ottawa.

The game will be broadcast live on the internet beginning at 1 p.m. It will be available from a link on the OUA website (www.oua.ca) and requires users to have a high-speed internet connection and Real Player software to view the game. The streaming will be provided by Xstream Webcasting of Ottawa.

The U of G team won the OUA west division title Feb. 26 with a 72-56 victory over Brock University. It is the first time Guelph claimed the OUA west division title since the inception of east and west conferences. The win guarantees the Gryphons a spot in the national Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) tournament March 11 to 13 in Winnipeg. The last time the team competed in the championships was when they hosted them in 1981.

“This team has displayed such talent and perseverance. I think they took people by surprise because they are such a young team. They have certainly brought recognition to Gryphon athletics," says Brenda Whiteside, associate vice-president (student affairs). All of Guelph’s five starters are in only their second year of eligibility.

As well, Guelph players Stephanie Yallin and Sharon Hollinshead were recently named to the OUA west all-star team and Heather Angus was named a member of the west all-rookie team. Coach Angela Orton was selected as the OUA west coach of the year.
