Record Number of U of G Athletes Heading to Nationals

The University of Guelph is sending more athletes than ever before to the national track and field and wrestling championships being held this month.

This weekend, eight U of G athletes will compete in the 2005 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) wrestling championships hosted by Brock University.

The men’s wrestling team will be led by Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champions Jamie Cox and Brandon Eyer. Cox is a former CIS champion and All-Canadian. Eyer is the OUA gold medallist and was named “most outstanding wrestler” at the OUA meet. Other competitors include John Ewing, defending CIS bronze medallist; Rory McDonell, who is making his fourth appearance at the national championship; and Matt Sparling, the OUA silver medallist; and Corey Hewitt, the OUA bronze medallist. The women’s team is represented by Meaghan Wilton, the OUA champion; and Leanne Ashworth, the OUA bronze medallist.

March 10 to 12, 27 Guelph track team members will compete at the CIS championships at the University of Manitoba. This year, the team won 14 individual OUA medals and the men’s team won a team bronze medal.

The top women’s team competitors include cross-country runner Kristina Rody, currently ranked No. 1 in the CIS; Neb Zachariah, ranked No. 2 in Canada in the triple jump; high jumper Michelle Moody, currently ranked No. 2 in CIS; and pentathlon athletes Liz Akeroyd, OUA champion; and Brae-Anne McArthur, OUA silver medallist.

On the men’s side, top medal contenders include Pat Szpak, OUA shot put champion; Owen Willems, ranked No. 3 by the CIS in shot put; and Greg Baril-Kenney, ranked No. 2 in Canada in the high jump.
