Women’s Basketball Team Wins OUA Title

The University's women’s basketball team won the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) title today. The Gryphons defeated the east division champions, the University of Ottawa, 87 to 68 before a sold-out crowd.

The Guelph team, which won the OUA west division title last weekend, will now be heading to the national Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) tournament March 11 to 13 in Winnipeg. The last time U of G’s women’s basketball team competed in the championships was when they hosted them in 1981.

“This team has displayed such talent and perseverance. I think they took people by surprise because they are such a young team. They have certainly brought recognition to Gryphon athletics," says Brenda Whiteside, associate vice-president (student affairs).

All of Guelph’s five starters are in only their second year of eligibility. Players Stephanie Yallin and Sharon Hollinshead were recently named to the OUA west all-star team and Heather Angus was named a member of the west all-rookie team. Coach Angela Orton was selected as the OUA west coach of the year.
