Funeral Services Set for Elizabeth Winegard

Funeral services for Elizabeth Winegard, spouse of former U of G president Bill Winegard, have been set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church in Guelph. Mrs. Winegard died Saturday following a long illness.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wall-Custance Funeral Home, 206 Norfolk Street. A tree will also be planted in memory of Mrs. Winegard in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest in the University’s Arboretum.

“On behalf of the University community past and present, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Winegard family, who will be grieving the sad loss of Elizabeth,” says president Alastair Summerlee. “To many members of the University community, when the Winegards were here, she was a cornerstone of the community."

Bill Winegard served as U of G president from 1967 to 1975. After retiring from academia and U of G in 1975, he served as a member of Parliament for Guelph from 1984 to 1993.

Predeceased by her daughter, Kathryn, Mrs. Winegard is survived by her husband; two sons, Bill and Charles; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers and a sister.
