U of G Student Debuts in Disney Film

A University of Guelph student is making her film debut in the Disney movie Ice Princess , which opened today.

Jocelyn Lai, a third-year bio-medical science student, plays the role of Tiffany, one of three elite skaters on the U.S. National circuit who help the lead character, Casey, (played by Michelle Trachtenberg) realize her dream of becoming a champion skater.

“She has a close relationship with her father, who is always there supporting her,” Lai said of her character. “But he puts a lot of pressure on her and is always wanting her to do better. She’s at a point where she is no longer skating for herself, but is skating to please her father.”

Filming of Ice Princess began last April, just as Lai was finishing final exams, and continued through the summer. “The experience was awesome. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I met great people who were so talented, and the entire production had such a great feel,” she said.

Lai attended the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on March 13.

A skater since the age of five, Lai was also a member of the Toronto Raptors Jr. Dance Pack, where she had the opportunity to tour North America.

She started pursuing acting at age 13. Although she loves the entertainment industry and plans to continue acting, she is working toward a career in medicine and plans to become a pediatrician.
