U of G Students Win NSERC Scholarships

Two University of Guelph students have been awarded the prestigious 2005 Julie Payette Research Scholarship from Science and Engineering Research Canada. (NSERC).

The scholarships are offered to 24 students across Canada who display outstanding academic excellence, research ability, leadership and communication skills. The prize is valued at $25,000.

“I feel really honoured to have been selected to represent the many talented and aspiring researchers in Canada,” said Karen Eny, a fourth-year student in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition. Eny has been accepted to a combined dietetic internship-master of science program through Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto. She will study how nutrition and genes interact to produce various health outcomes. “I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to contribute to a budding field of research,” she said. “There is so much to be discovered in this area.”

Kimberley Schneider, who is completing the first year of a masters degree in land resource science, said she feels very privileged to have won. Working with faculty adviser Peter van Straaten, she is studying the advancement of alternative fertilizers for developing countries that will improve soil fertility by using micro-organisms to break down phosphate rock material. “It’s wonderful — I’m thrilled she is getting this award,” said van Straaten.

Named for the Canadian astronaut and NSERC council member, the Payette scholarships are awarded to students for their first or second year of graduate studies.
