Whitebox has been developed for the Microsoft Windows platform, targeting the .NET framework 3.5. As such, users will need to have the .NET framework installed and operating on their computers. If you experience an error when you first try to launch the program, you likely do not have the .NET framework installed on your machine. I have not yet tested Whitebox on a computer running the Linux operating system and the Mono framework, though theoretically, it should work. If you plan to attempt this, I would be very interested in knowing how successful you are.
Whitebox also relies on the ICSharpeCode.NRefractory and ICSharpeCode.TextEditor software for code colouring and conversion (both are necessary for the 'View Code' button to work properly). The files are distributed with Whitebox and should operate as is. That said, I have not tested this thoroughly on a variety of machines/operating systems and it may be necessary for you to install these files independently. I have run Whitebox without issue on Windows XP, Windows Vista 32-bit, and Windows 7 64-bit.
Installing Whitebox should be as easy as downloading the zipped file below, unzipping it onto a local directory on your computer and double-clicking the Whitebox.exe executable file. (Fingers crossed that it works!) I have actually been able to run the software without problems off of a USB pen drive, which is truly ideal for teaching purposes.
To launch the program, click on the WhiteboxGAT.exe file in the main folder from within Windows Explorer. You may wish to place a shortcut to this file on your desktop for easier access. To open the source-code, open the 'GeospatialAnalysisTools.sln' solution file in a VB.NET integrated development tool (IDE) such as VB.NET Express Edition. The solution file will contain each of the project files. The start-up project, GeospatialAnalysisTools is the main Whitebox GAT user-interface, while most of the other projects are libraries of tools.

Software License
Whitebox GAT is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 3. The action of downloading this software carries with it an implicit agreement to abide by the terms of the license. Notice that ICSharpeCode.NRefractory and ICSharpeCode.TextEditor are distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
Download the Whitebox GAT Logo
The following Whitebox GAT logos can be downloaded by right-clicking over the images and selecting 'Save Picture As'. Notice that the logos are in png format. Although you may incorporate these logos into your work and presentations, please do not modify the images in any way, aside from scaling.
