Declining Specified Transfer Credit:
If you’ve been assigned advanced standing transfer credit and wish to decline it, you need to fill out the “Decline Specified Transfer Form”. This has to be done within the first 30 class days of the semester and transfer credit cannot be added again if declined.
If you decline the transfer credit, you will still receive a generic or unspecified credit that can still be used for degree completion if there is ‘free elective’ requirements for your degree. We encourage you to speak with your Program Counsellor (listed on your offer letter) before declining your specified transfer credit.
Why would I decline a credit?
If you receive advanced standing credit then it may allow you to have a lighter course load in certain semesters. However, international students should consider eligibility for scholarships, awards and post-graduate work permits when selecting their course loads for each semester.
Many students also want to take entry level courses so they can ensure they have a solid foundation for future courses. The course content and instruction style will prepare students well for any courses that build upon these entry level courses that may be assigned. Many students who decline specified credits also see value in being in the same classes as their peers who will be progressing through their studies in the same cohort.

No, you don’t have to take the course you were given credit for. You’ve already covered the content of that course in your previous curriculum, so you don’t need to take it again.
Yes! If you would like to keep the specified transfer credit then you will need to drop the same course that you are enrolled in. If you wish to change your specified transfer credit into an unspecified credit so you can stay in the course you registered for, you would need to fill out the “Decline Specified Transfer Form”.
No. Different programs have different requirements to earn a degree, and that creates some variability in how advanced standing credits are assigned depending on which program you are entering. For example, if you’ve completed A-level Mathematics, you would be assigned MATH 1080 Elements of Calculus 1 if going into a biological science program, but if going into an engineering program, you would receive MATH 1200 Calculus 1. The two different programs have different math courses for their degree requirements, and as such, two different math courses are assigned.
