The University of Guelph offers formal training in animal welfare via graduate studies and a variety of undergraduate courses and opportunities. Some courses offer content that is exclusively behaviour and welfare related, some include components of the topic, while others offer students the flexibility to explore a topic of their choosing. The Campbell Centre has compiled a list of of undergraduate level, graduate level and veterinary courses. For information on opportunities to study animal welfare as an undergraduate student, please see our Undergraduate Programs page. For information on joining us as a graduate student, please see our Graduate Programs page.
In addition, we offer an online Certificate in Equine Welfare program together with the Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support, and Equine Guelph. Offered as an extension of the award-winning Equine Science Certificate, the Equine Welfare Certificate provides students with the opportunity to investigate and discuss various aspects of equine welfare, explore animal welfare research, and critically examine some of the welfare issues within the equine industry, and within different sectors. This certificate assists students to become knowledgeable stakeholders on equine welfare issues; able to consider multiple perspectives, and to engage in effective dialogue with each other, community members, and researchers, thereby assisting the community in recognizing equine welfare issues and their solutions.
As part of our education extension, CCSAW provides annual week-long training in Livestock and Poultry Welfare Assessment for all Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) inspectors. Together with Equine Guelph, we also offer a week of Equine Welfare Assessment training. These courses cover the basics of poultry, livestock, and equine management and welfare assessment. Our welfare assessment courses can be adapted to meet the needs of different organizations and offered as tailored courses, and/or can be offered to individuals in government, industry, retail, etc. Contact us if you would like to discuss how you might tailor this particular training to your company or organization.
