HTM expansion receives government support

The University of Guelph will receive more than $1 million in funding from the provincial government to help finance the expansion of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management’s award-winning teaching restaurant, it was announced today.

You can access the news release from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities on its website.

The HTM expansion is designed to meet the school’s need for more space and the industry’s need for more and better qualified people. The expansion will provide additional facilities for some 234 new students. It will also allow HTM to incorporate new food preparation technologies and update its information systems for reservations, table management, ordering and productivity.

A new multi-purpose atrium will be built for use as an 85-seat dining room, lecture space, working laboratory and special-event facility. The project will also double the restaurant’s food production space by expanding into the current dining room. The restaurant, which has won the Eat Smart! Award several times for its commitment to high-quality food and food safety, allows third-year students to apply their multi-disciplinary study of general management in planning, purchasing, storage, production, marketing and service. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner several days a week to the campus and community.

The expansion project has also received backing from industry through the University’s campaign, including gifts from McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts.
