U of G gearing up for United Way campaign

The University of Guelph’s annual United Way campaign will be officially launched Sept. 30 with a barbecue and entertainment. The 2004 fundraising goal will be announced at the event, which runs from noon to 2 p.m. on Branion Plaza.

Last year, U of G set a goal of $285,000 and raised more than $319,000. United Way Campaign co-chair Prof. Anthony Clarke, assistant vice-president (academic), says the campus committee plans to better last year’s total.

Clarke and Irene Thompson, assistant director of residence life, are heading up a volunteer committee of faculty, staff, retirees and students who help make U of G the city’s largest corporate supporter of United Way Services of Guelph and Wellington. Many of those volunteers will don aprons to help out at the barbecue, which includes live music and other activities.

A new, student-initiated tuition lottery is helping kick-start the annual campaign. Tickets are on sale now for $5 in the MacKinnon Building, Room 138, and the Central Student Association office. Tickets will also be available at the barbecue. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the U of g United Way campaign.

The $2,500 prize is being sponsored by various student government groups on campus, and the lottery offers an additional 50 prizes donated by Guelph businesses and campus departments. Anyone can buy a ticket, but the grand prize must be designated to a current U of G undergraduate or graduate student. The prize money will be deposited directly in the student’s University account. The draw date is Oct. 15.

The lottery project was spearheaded by students Hannah Draper, a member of the campus United Way committee; Stu Solomon, president of the College of Arts Student Union; and Aiden Abram, Magic Bus co-ordinator for the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences Student Alliance.
