Lead Conservation in a Complex World
The Master of Conservation Leadership at the University of Guelph is a career-focused graduate program designed for professionals ready to expand their influence and contribute to meaningful environmental change. As biodiversity, climate and governance issues become increasingly interconnected, there is a growing need for practitioners who can navigate complexity and build collaborative solutions.
The program emphasizes innovative conservation practice, including Indigenous-led conservation governance, private and working lands conservation, and partnership engagement. Students explore how strategic conservation practice can respond to urgent biodiversity, climate and governance challenges while building the expertise needed to drive meaningful change across the sector.
Through a combination of academic learning, applied professional development and individualized support, students strengthen their ability to influence, collaborate and create impact within the conservation sector. Personalized leadership coaching, faculty and advisor guidance, and mentorship opportunities support students as they develop and complete a final project connected to real-world conservation work.

Program Format and Learning Experience for Conservation Leadership
The Master of Conservation Leadership is a 24-month professional graduate program designed to help experienced practitioners advance their education while continuing to contribute to their organizations and communities. Its hybrid format combines online coursework, virtual collaborative learning spaces and two in-person residencies designed around field-based and land-based learning.

Conservation governance
Students participate in two week-long residencies throughout the program. These residencies provide opportunities to connect with peers, engage in land-based learning and learn from conservation thought leaders and partners. The first residency takes place in partnership with a First Nation and focuses on Indigenous history, relationships with the land, traditional and contemporary governance, conservation and ceremony.
