Program Information

Students in the 8 semester (40 courses) honours program in Family and Consumer Studies (Bachelor of Applied Science) select 1 of 4 major areas of study-Applied Human Nutrition, Child Studies, Family & Social Relations or Gerontology. Given the professional and applied character of the program, there are no minors associated with this degree. Elective offerings enable students to select courses which support or complement their primary field of study.

Program in Family and Consumer Studies

The program is interdisciplinary and provides a distinctive and integrated focus of applied science in each of the 4 majors. Courses from the traditional disciplines in other colleges in the University are coupled with courses offered by faculty members in the College of Family and Consumer Studies whose own backgrounds reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the college.

Laboratory, practicum and field experiences enhance the students' opportunities to grasp the contributions of the social, physical and biological sciences to significant facets of human behaviour and experience, whether in family, community, or in educational settings.

Academic Counselling

Program Counselling

A B.A.Sc. program counsellor is available to assist prospective students in the selection of their major and initial courses, and to respond to questions regarding any other aspects of their anticipated program. The program counsellor will also assist in-course students who need information or advice about their program or other academic regulations, who seek information on services and resources available to students or who are contemplating transfer into or out of their current major or degree program.

Academic Advising

On entering the program all students are assigned to a departmental advisor. This advisor is thoroughly familiar with the academic requirements of the program and is also knowledgable about career opportunities which relate to a student's specific major. Students are strongly encouraged to attend all meetings called by their departmental advisors, and to set up individual meetings with them when they have questions or concerns about their major, or their performance in the program.

Special Expenses

Expenses for field trips can range from $20 to $30 per semester in the first 4 semesters and from $25 to $50 in each of the last 4 semesters. In certain courses modest expenses will be incurred for supplies and where appropriate for laboratory costs.

Degree

The degree granted for successful completion of the program will be the Bachelor of Applied Science, B.A.Sc.

Continuation of Study

Students are advised to consult the regulations for continuation of study within the program which are outlined in detail in Section VIII--Undergraduate Degree Regulations & Procedures. Students in the B.A.Sc. program may repeat any failed course only once. Failure to successfully complete a required (core) course on the second attempt results in the students not being permitted to continue in their major and/or program.

Conditions for Graduation

Schedules B and C

In order to qualify for graduation from the 8 semester honours B.A.Sc. program, the student must successfully complete the stated requirements for a specific major, and at least 60% of all course attempts excluding diploma courses, must be at a grade of 60% or better.

Co-operative Education Programs

Program in Family and Consumer Studies

Normally students will include 5 courses in each of the 8 semesters of the program and will register in 1 of the 4 majors set forth below. Those who have not made a decision regarding the choice of a major must contact the program counsellor for the B.A.Sc. program for assistance in selecting the appropriate courses for semester 1. The declaration of a major should be completed by the end of the 2nd semester.

Teaching Certification in Family Studies

Students who intend to qualify for a specialist teaching certificate in Family Studies are advised to choose the Family and Social Relations major and include a minimum of 4 courses from other departments beyond the core requirements from the Family and Social Relations major. A list of appropriate electives, from which these courses may be chosen, is available from the office of the Chair of the Department of Family Studies, and from the program counsellor.

Completion of these courses is necessary both for admission to a College of Education and for eligibility for certification by the Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation. Students should also consult their advisors regarding the requirements for a second teaching option.
