Department of History, College of Arts.
Courses marked (H) are designed as honours courses. Students in a general program wishing to take these must obtain the permission of instructors concerned. All other courses may be taken by both general and honours students. Students wishing to take a 300 level course must have pass standing in at least 10 university credit courses.
Students wishing to take a 400 level course must have pass standing in at least 20 university credit courses. To enroll in a 400 level course, students must have a 70% average in all history courses taken beyond the 100 level. Students should note the prerequisite requirements of upper level courses in planning their individual programs
Students entering semester 1 are advised to choose from 100 level courses. Second semester students wishing to take an advanced level History course should select that course from the History core.
A minimum of 10 History courses is required:
At least 3 History courses must be at the 300 level (excluding49-347 and 49-397). Students should take the History core requirements.
Note: With the permission of the department, students may select as part of their program 1 course outside the History Department such as36-232 or 36-355.

Honours students in History may, with the permission of the department, take up to 2 courses from outside the department such as 36-232 and 36-355. Students considering graduate work are advised to take 4-6 additional upper level History courses perhaps including the Special History Project Seminar (49-447, 49-497), and to acquire a reading knowledge of a foreign language. Honours students must complete 49-245 by the end of their third semester to be eligible for 300 level History courses.
