Department of Political Studies, College of Social Science.
The Department of Political Studies offers courses across the full range of the discipline of Political Science; grouped together into three fields including Political Theory and Analysis, Canadian Government/Public Policy and Administration and Comparative Policies/International Relations. A brochure describing each of these fields and containing further course information is available from the departmental office. The Department of Political Studies also participates in several interdisciplinary programs, including Canadian Studies, European Studies, and International Development Studies, and offers a number of its courses for credit through Distance Education and Open Learning.
Students taking courses in Political Studies may enrol initially in 78-115, 78-140, 78-150, the latter 2 courses providing overview and introductory treatments of particular interest to students who wish to take higher level courses in the department but who do not intend to specialize in the discipline. For students intending to pursue a general or honours specialization in Political Studies, however, 78-115 is a required prerequisite for higher level courses.
Courses at the 200 level provide students with essential grounding in specific areas of the discipline and are normally prerequisite for enrolment in 300 and 400 level courses. Students intending to minor in political science are strongly advised to enrol in 78-365 The Systematic Study of Politics, a course which is a required course for major honours students.
