V--Special Study Opportunities
There are various exchange programs available to undergraduate students who wish to study at an institution located in a different province or country for varying periods of time. For regulations on exchange programs, refer to Section VIII--Undergraduate Degree Regulations and Procedures. The following exchange programs are currently available to undergraduate students. There are additional exchange opportunities under consideration that are not outlined in this section. Details can be ascertained through the appropriate program counsellors or by contacting the Centre for International Programs.
The exchange program with the University of Aberdeen, Scotland is open to students with a variety of academic interests in the arts, humanities, basic sciences, social sciences, and professional fields. The objective of the exchange is to increase students understanding of Scottish culture and to improve educational offerings through expanding the pool of teachers, students, and facilities. The exchange will offer a selection of courses from the full range of programs offered at each institution and will be open to both Graduate and Undergraduate students. Students in the B.Sc. Food Science Specialized Honours program are eligible to spend 1 or 2 semesters in France at any of the participating universities of the AGORAL network, which include ENSIA (Massy), ENSBANA (Dijon), ENSAIA (Nancy), and ENITIAA (Nantes). This exchange will be most suited to students entering their third or fourth year. Fluency in french is required. For further details, consult with the departmental advisor in Food Science.
The universities of Ontario offer 50 students each year the opportunity to study at a university in Ontario's sister province of Baden Wurttemberg, Germany. The program is open to students in all fields. Students who are selected must enrol in a full time course of study at a Baden Wurttemberg university. Competence in German appropriate to the field of study and level of study is required. For more details, consult with Renate Benson, Department of Languages and Literatures.
Students from Semester 2, OVC, may apply to participate in an exchange program with the School of Veterinary Science, University of Bristol. Up to 3 students per year will be chosen to attend for the 3rd semester. The exchange involves a total of 6 credits. Further information can be obtained from the coordinator of the elective/externship programs.
Students from the School of Landscape Architecture may apply to participate in an exchange program with the Department of Landscape Architecture, California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Up to 5 students per year will be chosen to attend for 1 or 2 semesters for a maximum of 8 credits. For more details, consult with the exchange coordinator for the B.L.A. program.
Students from the School of Landscape Architecture may apply to participate in an exchange program with the Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Canberra, Australia. Up to 5 students per year will be chosen to attend for the equivalent of 2 semesters for a maximum of 8 credits. The objective of the exchange program is to learn and understand cultural, historical and architectural resources of Australia. The Universita' Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is one of the leading teaching and research universities in Italy. Programs offered include Business and Banking, Economics, Law Humanities, Art History, Natural Science, Medicine, and Agricultural Sciences. The exchange is open to all Guelph students. The Catholic University is part of the Erasmus program, the exchange program within the European Union, so that Canadian students are normally studying side by side with other non-Italian students. Language of instruction is Italian. Past experience shows that a minimum knowledge of Italian or fluency in either French or Spanish is sufficient to overcome the practical language problems. Students interested in this exciting opportunity should contact the exchange coordinator Prof. F. Braga at extension 2763 at least 1 semester before the desired departure date.
An exchange agreement between the Royal Agricultural College, England and the Ontario Agricultural College, of the University of Guelph provides an opportunity for students in agriculture to participate in an exchange program of 1 or 2 semesters. The objective of the program is to provide students with an opportunity to understand production practices in a variety of climates and, for Guelph students, to have gained exposure to the Economics Community, international trade and agricultural commodities, and other related matters. Students in any area of agricultural science or agricultural business are eligible for this exchange program; normally students are in semesters 5, 6, or 7 at the time of their study at RAC. A semester of study (the fall semester) is available at E.A.R.T.H. (Escuela de Agricultura de la Region Tropical Humeda) an international institute with interests in sustainable agriculture, resources management and rural development, in Costa Rica. Students may participate in this program along with students from other faculties of agriculture in Canada. This program was first offered in the Fall semester 1994. This exchange/study abroad program, open to students from several degree programs, provides opportunities for Guelph students to spend a semester in partner universities in 11 countries and 2 regions of the Commonwealth. Standing for Commonwealth Universities Study Abroad Consortium, CUSAC is designed primarily to permit Guelph students to study in a university in a tropical Commonwealth country. CUSEC is an agreement among 25 Canadian universities to encourage the development of specific linkages between departments/faculties, academic disciplines or degree programs, and broader fields of study. Students wishing to enrol in up to 1 academic year at another participating university outside of Ontario should contact the CUSEC coordinator through the Centre for International Programs. The programs is open to students who have completed at least 1 full year of study at Guelph.

Up to 2 students per year will be chosen to attend for the equivalent of 2 semesters for a maximum of 8 credits. The objective of the exchange program is to learn and understand cultural, historical and architectural resources of Europe. The exchange program with the University of Hohenheim, Germany is open to undergraduate and graduate students in the field of political/business studies, agricultural, biological, and nutritional sciences. The objective of the exchange is to expand educational and research offerings at both universities. working knowledge in German is required, however, the excellent computerized language centre offers a variety of German courses for foreigners. The program is designed to encourage a greater understanding of the culture and educational systems of Ontario and Baden-Wurttemberg amongst the students at Guelph and Konstanz. The exchange program is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students in all areas of study. Student must be able to demonstrate a sufficient competence in the German language, and an appropriate level of study in their chosen area. Students who are selected to take part in the exchange program are required to enrol in a full-time course of study in Konstanz. For further information, contact Prof. John L. Each year, up to 10 Bachelor of Commerce students, or other undergraduates enrolled in business related specializations, may study at L'Ecole Superieure de Commerce de la Rochelle, France. (A comparable number of students from la Rochelle study here at Guelph). Guelph students live, study, and exchange ideas in French and English with other students and faculty at the French University. Courses taken on this exchange give students the opportunity to become acquainted with the European business environment, and especially with business policy and practice in France. The location provides an exceptional opportunity to become acquainted with European, and especially French language, culture and customs. The Muresk Institute of Agriculture of Curtin University, Western Australia, provides an opportunity for students in agricultural business or agricultural economics to spend 1 or 2 semesters (February to July and July to November). The Muresk Institute specializes in courses in farm management, production economics and agricultural business management at a practical level. Students in other areas of agricultural science are eligible to participate in this program should they wish 1 or 2 semesters of courses concentrating in farm management and production economics. This exchange agreement between the University of Osaka Prefecture and the University of Guelph is designed to facilitate the exchange of undergraduate veterinary students, graduate students and international academic study between the veterinary colleges of the 2 institutions. Courses taken will be eligible for credit at the home university. The exchange will be for 1 semester or academic year.
Students from the School of Landscape Architecture may apply to participate in an exchange with the Department of Regional Environmental Science, University of Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Up to 2 students per year will be chosen to attend for the equivalent of 2 semesters for a maximum of 8 course credits. The objective of this exchange program is to learn and understand cultural, historical and architectural resources of Europe. This exchange between the University of Plymouth, England and the University of Guelph is designed to facilitate the exchange of undergraduate and graduate students to provide opportunities for research and for conducting at least some of their programs abroad. Students on the exchange will primarily be involved in environmental programs; however, it will not be restricted to narrowly defined fields and depending upon the availability of resources, participation will be open to all interested members of both institutions. The exchange allows for up to 10 students to be exchanged in any academic year.
The Rhone-Alpes/Ontario Exchange Program is intended to foster relations between the 2 participating regions and takes the form of an exchange of about 25 undergraduate students (of which the University of Guelph quota is usually 2 or 3, from any program) in each direction for a calendar year. Provincial government support is provided to offset some of the costs of relocation, and course credits towards a Guelph degree can usually be arranged for all courses studied at the host institution. Applications are considered on an annual basis and are due in the Fall semester; details of application procedures (which include a test of a student's fluency in French) are announced well in advance of the mid-December deadline.
This exchange agreement between the University of Stirling, Scotland and the University of Guelph is designed to facilitate international academic exchange between the 2 institutions. There will be an opportunity for undergraduate and post-graduate students whose studies include an emphasis in the area of the environment. However, the focus will not be limited to this narrow field. The exchange will annually provide 5 students with the opportunity to attend the host institution.
This agreement is between the University of Strathclyde, Scotland and the University of Guelph and allows for up to 4 students to transfer per year, 2 from the University of Guelph and 2 from the University of Strathclyde. The exchange is open to undergraduate students in the areas of Arts, Social Sciences, general Science and Business Administration.
Students from the School of Landscape Architecture may apply to participate in an exchange with the Department of Landscape Planning, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden. Up to 2 students per year will be chosen to attend for the equivalent of 2 semesters for a maximum of 8 course credits. The objective of this exchange program is to learn and understand cultural, historical and architectural resources of Europe. This agreement encourages several students per year to spend a semester at Wageningen Agricultural University in The Netherlands. Academic fields range from agricultural science to landscape architecture and rural social science. Some funding is available. Undergraduate students must be able to speak Dutch. This is an agreement between the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Guelph to facilitate the exchange of undergraduate and graduate students who study in the area of the environment. The exchange allows for up to 10 undergraduate students to study at the host institution per academic year.
