Entrance Awards

President's Scholarships

The most prestigious entrance awards at the University of Guelph. Thirteen scholarships of $20,000 ($5,000 annually), named to honour their donors or distinguished members of the University, are awarded to entering students of academic distinction who have made significant contributions to their schools and communities and demonstrated the potential to become leaders in society. Nominations are made by high school principals and are to be sent to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

A number of President's Scholarships have been named in honour of the following people:

President's Scholarships (Dick Brown)

Three of the scholarships are endowed by Dr. Patrick Lett to winners whose leadership qualities best reflect those demonstrated by Dick Brown in University Athletics from 1968 to 1988.

President's Scholarship (Cecil H. Franklin and Ingrid Franklin)

In honour of Cecil Franklin, former Chair of the Board of Governors and Honorary Fellow of the University, the University of Guelph has named one of these thirteen prestigious entrance awards to recognize his financial contributions and volunteer support to the President's Entrance Scholarship program.

President's Scholarship (Charles S. Humphrey)

In memory of Charles S. Humphrey, a former President of Hart Chemical Company Canada Ltd. and long-time friend, the University has named one of these thirteen prestigious entrance awards to recognize his financial contribution through his estate to the President's Entrance Scholarship program.

President's Scholarship (Jack R. Longstaffe)

The University of Guelph has named one of these thirteen prestigious entrance awards in memory of Jack R. Longstaffe to recognize his financial contribution through his estate to the President's Entrance Scholarship program.

President's Scholarship (Burton C. Matthews)

The University of Guelph has named one of these thirteen prestigious entrance awards in honour of Burton C. Matthews to recognize his insight and leadership in establishing the President's Entrance Scholarship program.

President's Scholarship (Kathleen and Frederick Metcalf)

This award has been endowed by Mr. and Mrs. F.T. Metcalf of Guelph. After a distinguished career in cable TV, broadcasting and publishing, the late Mr. Metcalf retired as President of Maclean Hunter Ltd. and Chairman of the Board of Maclean Hunter Cable Ltd. He was Honorary Chairman of Maclean Hunter Cable Ltd. and a member of the University of Guelph Heritage Board (1996).

President's Scholarship (Rol-land Farms Limited)

Two of the scholarships are endowed by the four shareholders of Rol-land Farms Limited of Blenheim, Ontario, Hank, Peter, Arthur and Eric Vander Pol and their families. The Vander Pol family are generous supporters of a number of University projects and programs.

President's Scholarship (Lillian Usher Stewart)

The University of Guelph has named one of these thirteen prestigious entrance awards in honour of Lillian Usher Stewart a friend of the University to recognize her financial contribution through her estate to the President's Entrance Scholarship program.

Qualifications: Entering students of academic distinction who have made significant contributions to their schools and communities and demonstrated the potential to become leaders in society.
Amount: Thirteen scholarships of $16,000 ($4,000 annually).

Alma Mater Entrance Scholarships

The scholarship is not tenable with other entrance scholarships.

Qualifications: Students entering the first semester with a minimum 80% average. The scholarship will be paid in four instalments with $2,000 being paid in semester 1 and $1,000 paid in semesters 3, 5 and 7. Payments made in semesters 3, 5 and 7 are contingent upon a minimum average of 75% over the previous two semester of full-time study. Students who fail to qualify for a payment may re-qualify by subsequently obtaining a 75% or better average over the previous two semesters of full-time study.
Amount: Two scholarships of $5,000.

Board of Governors' Scholarships

The scholarship will be paid in eight equal instalments with the first and second payments payable shortly after registration in semesters 1 and 2. The 3rd to 8th payments are contingent upon obtaining a minimum average of 80% over the previous two semesters of full-time study. Students who fail to qualify for a payment may re-qualify by subsequently obtaining an 80% or better average over the previous two semesters of full-time study.

Qualifications: Outstanding students entering semester 1.
Amount: Twenty-five scholarships of $8,000.

Buffett Taylor Bursary

Applications are available at the High School Guidance offices within the designated area. Submission required by May 1 to the Student Financial Services Office.

Qualifications: Student entering the University of Guelph from the Durham Region, or the counties of Northumberland and Peterborough, who can demonstrate financial need, maintains a 'B' average and demonstrates leadership in his/her high school and community.
Amount: Recipients will receive $2,000 annually for a period of 4 years.

The P.A.J. Clarke Family Scholarship

The endowment for this entrance scholarship was established by Paul and Aileen Clarke and their family in honour of Paul's father, the late Jack Clarke, a Blenheim area farmer. The P.A.J. Clarke Family Scholarship application form must be submitted to Student Financial Services by April 1. Applications are available through Student Financial Services

Qualifications: Students with a minimum 80% average with a record of leadership and community participation are eligible. Preference will be given to candidates from Blenheim district or Kent County and who were raised, or have worked, on a farm. Students may be contacted to provide special need circumstances if there exists a short list of equal candidates.
Amount: Each award is $2,500 per year for four years, provided the recipient is enrolled full time and maintains a minimum 80% average.

Harvey Graham Bursary

Harvey Graham of OAC '39 provides a bursary of $1,375 to an entering student who has demonstrated financial need and who comes from a working farm. Only students graduating from Lindsay C. V. I., Fenelon Falls Secondary School , or I. E. Weldon Secondary School will be considered. Each application must be accompanied by a reference letter from the Reeve of the student's home township. Apply by letter to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by May 1.

Qualifications: Student entering any program who has demonstrated financial need and is from a viable family farm. The preferred farm location is 1) Mariposa Township, 2) Township of Ops, 3) Township of Fenelon, in that order. Each application must be supported by at least one reference letter from a qualified official (Such as the Reeve of the Township) who has independent knowledge of the merits of the application.
Amount: $1,375.

The Kenneth O. Hammill - Blount Canada Scholarship

Created in honour of Kenneth Osborne Hammill, a long time friend of the University and retired plant manager of Blount Canada. Winners will be chosen from the pool of those not selected for the President's Scholarship. The winners will bear the honorary title of "Blount Canada Scholar". This award is not tenable with other Senate entrance awards.

Qualifications: Students from the Province of Ontario entering one of the following programs: B.Sc., B.Sc.(Agr.), B.Sc.(Eng.), B.Sc.(Env.), B.Comm., B.A.Sc., and B.A. Recipients will have to maintain a B+ average or higher and be full-time students in order to qualify for subsequent instalments. During the summer after the 3rd year, the scholars will undertake an enrichment experiential program related to their studies. A grant of up to $1,200 to offset the costs of this enrichment program will be made available to each student.
Amount: Four scholarships of up to $9,600 payable in semesterly instalments, one available for competition every year.

Gordon W. Innes Scholarship
Qualifications: Student from Oxford County with the highest admission average.
Amount: $1,100 annually.

Bill Klopp Memorial Award

Priority will be given to a student from Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational Institute.

Qualifications: Presented to a student entering semester 1 from the cities of Kitchener or Waterloo who has demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities who has shown satisfactory academic performance and who has financial need.
Amount: Annual award of $400.

The Jack and Lillian MacDonald Scholarship

Family, friends, and colleagues of Lillian MacDonald and Dr. Jack MacDonald, Vice-President, Academic, of the University of Guelph from 1986 to 1995, have established a scholarship that recognizes their commitment to increasing the accessibility of post-secondary education to aboriginal persons. In the first instance, the award of $600 will be given to an entering student coming from the Grand River Polytechnical Institute (GRPI) and who has received the highest cumulative average in the Native University Access Program. If there is no entering student in any one year, the scholarship will be awarded to the in-course student who is a graduate of the GRPI who has the highest cumulative average at the University. No application is necessary.

J.D. MacLachlan Scholarship
Qualifications: Student entering the University with the highest admission average.
Amount: Scholarship of $1,200 annually.

McArthur Humphries Scholarships

Provided by the Wilhelmina McArthur Humphries Trust Fund. This scholarship is not tenable with other Senate awards.

Qualifications: Students entering semester 1 from Lanark and Wellington Counties. An equal number of awards are available to students from each county. In the case of insufficient eligible applicants from one county, the awards will be given to eligible applicants from the other county.
Amount: Twelve annual entrance scholarships of $700.

P.A.J. Clarke Scholarship

The endowment for this scholarship was established by Paul and Aileen Clarke and their family in honour of Paul's parents, the late Jack and Blanche Clarke, Blenheim area farmers.

Qualifications: Students with a minimum 80% average with a record of leadership and community participation are eligible. Preference will be given to candidates from Blenheim district or Kent County and who were raised, or have worked, on a farm. Financial need will be considered. The application form must be submitted to the Office of Financial Services by April 1 (available from the same office).
Amount: $2,200 per year for four years, provided the recipient is enrolled full time and maintains a minimum 80% average.

Registrar's Access Awards

Offered to entering students on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Students who have applied to the University for admission will receive an application form from the University in April.

Amount: $500.

Robert Arthur Stewart Bursaries

In memory of Mrs. Elsa H. Stewart of Pakenham, Ontario. Mr. Stewart graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College in 1933 and Mrs. Stewart from Macdonald Institute in 1932. Applicants for these bursaries should have a good academic record and an active interest in community affairs. Recommendation from the County agricultural representative or the secondary school principal is required. Up to two awards are available for students entering in the Winter semester, up to two for those entering in Spring, and eight or the balance for those entering in Fall.

Qualifications: Students from the Ontario Counties of Lanark and Renfrew, and the Regional Municipality of Ottawa/Carleton, entering the 1st semester of a degree program at the University of Guelph.
Amount: Twelve bursaries of $500.

University of Guelph Faculty Association Scholarship

Award is payable at $500 per annum in the student's 1st, 3rd, and 5th semester levels, provided a cumulative average of at least a 70% is maintained. To receive the final payment, the recipient would normally be entering the 5th semester level within a period of 3 calendar years from the date of admission.

Qualifications: Student entering an undergraduate degree program at the University of Guelph who has been a resident in the County of Wellington during the previous twelve months.
Amount: Annual award of $1,500.

University Scholarships

Offered to 235 students. Payment of the scholarship will be in two instalments of $800 each. The 1st payment will be made shortly after registration in semester 1 and the 2nd payment shortly after registration in semester 2.

Qualifications: Students entering semester 1.
Amount: Entrance scholarships of $1,600.

In-Course Awards

Ken Berg Memorial Award

Apply to Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students with a minimum 'B' average and demonstrating financial need and significant improvement in marks during the last three semesters.
Amount: Annual award of $1,000.

David F. Boyes Apiculture Scholarship

In memory of David Boyes, Technician in the Apiculture Field Laboratory.

Qualifications: Student registered in the Fall semester who achieves high academic standing in Introductory Apiculture (34-221), demonstrates an interest in apiculture and who has participated in extracurricular activities.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: $125 annually.

Elizabeth Burton Bursaries

Enquiries should be made to Student Financial Services, Office of Registrarial Services.

Qualifications: Full-time students with demonstrated financial need.
Semester: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Certified General Accountants Assn. of Ontario Scholarship
Qualifications: Graduating student who has the highest cumulative average (min. 80%) in courses Management Accounting 02-223 and Intermediate Accounting 02-333.
Semester: 8.
Amount: $150 plus a credit of approximately $1,600 toward course fees in the CGA program.

CFRU Volunteer Award

Apply to the CFRU Board of Governors by April 30.

Qualifications: Applicants must be registered or graduating from the University of Guelph and have volunteered at CFRU for at least one year. The recipients will be selected on the basis of academic performance and volunteer work at CFRU.
Amount: Two awards of $250 annually.

Collins Barrow Award

Offered by Collins Barrow, a national firm of Chartered Accountants.

Qualifications: Student with the highest grade in course 02-333, Intermediate Accounting.
Amount: $500 in the Fall semester.

Deans' Scholarships

Offered by the Board of Governors. Recipients will be selected by each of the College Awards Committees. Winners will be notified no later than the end of October.

Qualifications: Students registered in any degree program. The main academic criteria is placement on the Deans' Honours List for two consecutive semesters.
Amount: 150 scholarships of $1,000.

John Eccles Scholarship

Nominations, accompanied by appropriate resumes, are to be submitted to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Full-time student registered in semester 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 and living in residence in the Winter semester who has a cumulative 80% average or who is in the top 10% of his/her program. The recipient must have demonstrated responsibility and leadership qualities through participation in residence related activities. Residence Life Staff and paid members of Interhall Council and Hall Councils are not eligible.
Semester: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $400.

Tara Lynn Giuliani Memorial Award

In memory of Tara Lynn Giuliani, a bright young woman, who did not let her blindness stand in the way of her studies at the University of Guelph. Apply to Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by October 15th.

Qualifications: Most academically promising applicant with a demonstrated disability and having financial need.
Amount: $500.

Governor General's Academic Medal
Qualifications: Restricted to those undergraduate students in any degree program who are graduating in June, or who have graduated in the previous two convocations, with the highest cumulative average.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Silver medal.

Kenneth W. Hammond Award

The evaluation of the student will be based on the final essay in the "Environmental Perspectives and Human Choice: 5000 Days" course. The selection committee will be comprised of 4 persons: the donor, the Director of the Arboretum, the Dean of Physical and Engineering Science and the Dean of Biological Science.

Qualifications: Student who has best demonstrated an understanding of the world's resource situation and its proper use by humankind.
Amount: $700.

Highdale Farms Scholarship

Not tenable with other awards exceeding $500. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: For students in semesters 3 through 6 with at least a 75% cumulative average and whose primary area of study is related to the natural sciences. One award is based on academic proficiency and the second award is based on academic proficiency and demonstrated leadership. Preference will be given to students from Ottawa-Carleton, Dundas-Glengarry-Stormont, Grenville, Lanark, Prescott-Russell and Renfrew counties.
Amount: Two annual awards of $1,000 each.

Kip Hunter Prize

For the best essay, written by an undergraduate in philosophy. The essay may be either a required assignment for a course (in which case either the student or the instructor may submit it) or it may be specially prepared for the competition. Submission of essays is to the Chair, Department of Philosophy, by the end of the 12th week of the Winter semester.

Qualifications: Any undergraduate who has registered for a philosophy course during the academic year in which the prize is awarded.
Semester: All Semesters.
Amount: Annual prize of books.

International Student Bursaries

Mrs. Norma L. Valeriote has made available a number of bursaries of variable amounts. Apply to the International Student Advisor.

Qualifications: Students who are citizens of Third World countries, as defined by the United Nations, who are registered in a degree or diploma program and who demonstrate financial need.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: Bursaries.

Arthur D. Latornell Undergraduate Travel Grants

An endowment fund established in memory of Arthur D. Latornell, OAC '50, who had a life-long professional career in resource management and conservation and a special interest in helping young people. The funds are given to provide twenty-five travel grants. These travel grants are offered to assist students in attending conferences, courses, co-op student exchanges or study abroad programs in these areas. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, at least one month prior to departure.

Qualifications: Students in semester 3 and above. Students must have at least a 70% average and a primary area of interest related to natural resources management, environmental science, conservation, soil science and/or rural development.
Amount: Up to 80% of estimated travel costs to a maximum of $1,000.

Ontario Co-operatives R. P. Forshaw Bursary

The Co-operatives, Credit Unions, friends and associates of Prof. R. P. Forshaw have established a bursary. Enquiries should be made to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services .

Qualifications: Undergraduate students who have financial need. Preference may be given to candidates who have been or are members of a co-operative or credit union.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: $300.

Rondeau Rod and Gun Club Scholarship
Qualifications: Student in any degree program who is studying in a natural resource management field. The scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average registered in semester 5, 6 or 7. Preference will be given to a student from Kent County. No recipient may receive the award more than once.
Semester: 5, 6 or 7.
Amount: $500 in the Fall semester.

Society of Management Accountants of Ontario Scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded in the Winter semester.

Qualifications: Full-time student registered in the B. Comm., B.A. (minor in Business Administration), or B.Sc. (minor in Business Administration), or B.Sc.(Agr.) (major in Agriculture Business or Agricultural Economics), programs. Student with the highest average in the 2 courses Financial Accounting 02-222 and Intermediate Accounting 02-333.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $500 and a free course enrolment in the first complete CMA subject enrolled in the Society's program.

Student Senator Caucus Chair's Prize

The Selection Committee is selected by the Striking Committee.

Qualifications: Student senator of high academic standing who has demonstrated innovative approaches to student representation. Preference will be given for contributions which improve the responsiveness of Student Senator Caucus to its student constituency and which increase the effectiveness of Caucus as a consultative body.
Amount: Annual graduate or undergraduate prize.

Bill Taylor Memorial Scholarship

Applications to include a supporting letter from a coach or intramural supervisor. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Full-time student registered in semester 4, 5, 6 or 7 in the Winter semester who has a cumulative 80% average or who is in the top 10% of his/her program. The recipient must have demonstrated responsibility and leadership qualities through participation in intramural or intercollegiate athletics.
Semester: 4, 5, 6, 7.
Amount: Annual award of $650.

Toronto District Beekeepers' Association Scholarship

A scholarship is offered by the Toronto District Beekeepers Association in memory of the late Hugh McLeod, past chair of the Association.

Qualifications: The recipient will have good academic standing, have participated in extracurricular activities, and demonstrated a keen interest in beekeeping.
Amount: $400.

University of Guelph Staff Association Scholarship

Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by January 31.

Qualifications: Student who is a member or former member, or who is from the immediate family of a member of the University of Guelph Staff Association, and who is entering semester 2, 3, or 4 of a degree or diploma program in the Winter semester. If there is more than one eligible candidate, the award will go to the one who has attained the highest relative class standing in his or her previous full-time semester, provided that a minimum of 70% standing is obtained.
Semester: 1, 2, 3.
Amount: One scholarship of $600 awarded annually.

University Police Bursaries

The University Police have made available a number of bursaries. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services, Office of Registrarial Services

Qualifications: Full-time undergraduate and graduate students who have financial need.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: Bursaries.

Van Stralen and Van Der Hoeven Memorial Scholarships

Application will be made by nominations signed by 4 currently registered students forwarded to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by March 15. Presentations are made in the Fall semester.

Qualifications: Students registered in semester 2 or 3 in the Winter semester in any degree program who have obtained a minimum of 70% standing. Selection will be made on the basis of participation in university activities and in the student's home community as well as qualities of leadership, ambition and initiative.
Semester: 2, 3.
Amount: Two scholarships of $300.

W.N. Vaughan Medal

Prospective candidates will be nominated by Senators and the medal winner will be chosen by a committee selected by the Striking Committee. The medal will be awarded at Convocation in June.

Qualifications: Student senator who has high academic standing and who has made a substantial contribution to student life and to the University, particularly through involvement in and commitment to Senate activities.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: Medal.

W.C. Winegard Medal

The most prestigious graduating award of the University of Guelph. One student will be nominated by each College Awards Committee. The Senate Awards Committee will make the final selection and the medal will be awarded at Convocation in June.

Qualifications: Graduating student who excels both academically and in extracurricular activities.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Medal.
