Bachelor of Applied Science

Entrance Awards

L. A. Beattie & J. C. Beattie Memorial Scholarship

The estate of Jessie L. Beattie has established a scholarship in memory of Lillie Ann Beattie and Jeannie Cockburn Beattie. The scholarship is awarded alternately between the B.A.Sc. and B.Comm. programs. To be awarded in the B.A.Sc. program in 1997.

Qualifications: Student entering the College of Family and Consumer Studies who achieved the highest mark in English during the final year of high school. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to students from rural areas.
Amount: $300.

Clara E. Elliott Education Scholarships

This scholarship is payable in 4 annual instalments of $2,000. The recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and evidence of participation in leadership roles, especially teaching and education. References from teachers and overall presentation of their application material will also be used to determine award recipients. To maintain the scholarship, the recipients must continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. Students accepted into the program will be invited to apply.

Qualifications: Academically outstanding students, normally full-time, who are entering the 1st semester of the B.A.Sc. program in the College of Family and Consumer Studies and who plan to pursue a career in teaching. Preference will be given to students planning a teaching career in areas related to Family and Consumer Studies including early childhood education and nutrition education.
Amount: Two scholarships of $8,000.

Clara E. Elliott Entrance Scholarships

This scholarship is payable in 4 instalments of $2,000 in each of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semester levels. To maintain the scholarship the recipient must continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given.

Qualifications: Full-time students entering the College of Family and Consumer Studies with a minimum average of 80% and who have demonstrated leadership potential.
Amount: Three scholarships of $8,000.

Adelaide Hoodless Entrance Scholarships

This scholarship is made in two instalments of $750 each in the student's first 2 semesters, provided that an average of 70% is obtained in the first semester. Funds made available from the estate of the late Muriel I. Bostwick in memory of the late Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless.

Qualifications: Students must have applied to either the B.A.Sc. program or the B. Comm. program, marketing major.
Amount: Five scholarships of $1,500.

MAC-FACS Alumni Entrance Scholarships

Three scholarships to be awarded in the Fall.

Qualifications: Students in the Family and Consumer Studies program.
Amount: One scholarship of $1,000 and two of $500.

In-Course Awards

Agincourt Milk Producers' Association Scholarship
Qualifications: Student preferably from a farm family in York County or the Region of Durham. The student must be entering the 7th semester level of the Family and Consumer Studies program with a good academic record and be majoring in Applied Human Nutrition.
Semester: 6.
Amount: $600.

Ann E. Barber Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student entering the 3rd, 4th or 5th semester level in the College of Family and Consumer Studies who has attained 80% standing in the semester just completed, and has indicated an ability to make a worthwhile contribution in student activities in residence or on campus.
Semester: 2, 3, 4.
Amount: $300.

A.M. Bell Prize

Provided by the estate of the late Adna M. Bell.

Qualifications: Student who obtains the highest grade in course 71-491, Research Applied Human Nutrition.
Semester: 8.
Amount: $150.

Jean C. Bradley Memorial Prize

This prize was established by the Macdonald Institute, class of 1929, and is administered by the Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association.

Qualifications: Graduating student on completion of the program of Family and Consumer Studies who has obtained the highest cumulative average in Applied Human Nutrition.
Semester: 8.
Amount: $300.

Dorothy Britton Memorial Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded in memory of Dorothy Britton, a graduate of Macdonald Institute (1939). Awarded on the basis of high academic achievement.

Qualifications: Students entering semesters 4 or 5 and enrolled in a major offered by the College of Family and Consumer Studies are eligible.
Semester: 4 or 5.
Amount: Up to six scholarships of $1,500 annually.

Anne Callagan Memorial Scholarship

The alumni, faculty and staff of the College of Family and Consumer Studies established a scholarship in memory of Professor Anne Callagan. To be awarded in 1997.

Qualifications: Co-op student in the Department of Family Studies who achieves the highest cumulative grade average over the first 4 semesters of study.
Semester: 4 or 6.
Amount: $400.

Elizabeth Landels Casselman Scholarship

Awarded annually from the estate of the late Elizabeth Landels Casselman.

Qualifications: Student entering the 5th semester levels of the B.A.Sc. program with 80% standing. Preference is given to a student showing potential for excellence and leadership in educational endeavors.
Semester: 4.
Amount: $1,000.

Ethel M. Christie Scholarship

Established by the late Dr. George I. Christie, former President of the Ontario Agricultural College, and his daughter, the late Margaret C. Hearn, in memory of the late Ethel M. Christie.

Qualifications: Student in Family and Consumer Studies who has achieved highest standing in 3 or more courses in English.
Semester: 6.
Amount: $100.

Class 1930 Scholarship

A student may receive this scholarship only once.

Qualifications: Student entering semester level 3, 4 or 5 who obtains highest standing in Family and Consumer Studies.
Semester: 3, 4, 5.
Amount: $200 annually.

Francois Cleyn Scholarship

Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student who has completed 6 semesters in clothing and textiles (option I or II) within the Department of Consumer Studies. The student must have a high academic standing and be involved in extracurricular activities.
Semester: 6.
Amount: $500.

Jessie Lambden Coles Bursaries

The late Gerald B. Coles has established a trust fund in memory of his late wife, Jessie Lambden Coles, a former member of the Macdonald Institute faculty. The bursaries are for students in the Family and Consumer Studies program. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services, Office of Registrarial Services.

Qualifications: Students of acceptable academic standing and needing financial assistance who have completed at least two semester levels in B.A.Sc. program.
Semester: 3 to 8.
Amount: Approximately $6,000 available.

Patricia Cosgrove Scholarship

Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1. To be awarded in 1998.

Qualifications: Students who have completed their 2nd or 3rd semester by April. Preference will be given to students showing general proficiency in both curricular and extracurricular work.
Semester: 2, 3.
Amount: $250 is awarded in alternate years.

Joan Doherty Memorial Graduate Scholarship

The family of Joan Doherty has established this scholarship. An application, accompanied by a one page written statement indicating the student's purpose, goals and objectives in pursuing graduate study, must be submitted to the Chair, B.A.Sc. Awards Subcommittee by April 1.

Qualifications: Member of the graduating class in Consumer Studies who will be continuing his or her education at the Master's or Doctoral degree level in a Canadian university. The scholarship recipient will be determined on the basis of academic promise as evidenced by undergraduate academic achievement. Should equally qualified students make application for the scholarship, preference will be given to previous winners of the Joan Doherty Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship.
Semester: 8.
Amount: $2,000 annually.

Joan Doherty Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

A scholarship has been established in memory of Joan Doherty, Class of '78, by her family. Nomination for the award is to be by classmates. Nomination forms are available in the Office of the Dean and must be returned by April 1.

Qualifications: Student entering semester 5, 6 or 7 in the Consumer Studies major. To be eligible the student must have a cumulative average of 70% or higher, must be an active participant in curricular and extracurricular affairs, and must be respected by fellow students and faculty members for character and sincerity.
Semester: 4, 5, 6.
Amount: $2,000 anually.

Sheila Esztelecky Memorial Scholarship
Qualifications: Student who achieves the highest mark in 21-317, Practicum -- Child Studies I.
Amount: $1,000.

Katherine Fuller Scholarship

A scholarship will be awarded to provide financial assistance.

Qualifications: Student entering the 3rd, 4th, or 5th semester of the Family and Consumer Studies program and who has demonstrated significant scholastic potential.
Semester: 2, 3, 4.
Amount: $300.

Guelph Branch, Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association Scholarship
Qualifications: Student standing highest at the completion of the 2nd semester level of the Family and Consumer Studies program.
Semester: 2.
Amount: One annual scholarship of $400.

H.H. Harshman Foundation Scholarships

Given by the H.H. Harshman Foundation. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students in the program in Family and Consumer Studies on the basis of academic proficiency and potential for leadership. One will be granted to a student entering the 5th semester level, one to a student entering the 7th semester level, and one to a student entering semester levels 5, 6 or 7.
Semester: 4, 5, 6.
Amount: Three scholarships of $1,500.

Adelaide Hoodless Memorial Scholarships

In memory of the late Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless, her son the late Bernard B.Hoodless established the Adelaide Hoodless Trust Fund. Students will be eligible for only one Adelaide Hoodless Memorial Scholarship.

Qualifications: Students entering semester levels 5, 6, or 7.
Semester: 4, 5, 6.
Amount: Two scholarships of $500 each.

Adelaide Hoodless Proficiency Scholarships

In memory of the late Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless, funds were made available from the estate of the late Muriel L. Bostwick for the provision of proficiency scholarships in the program in Family and Consumer Studies. These scholarships will be awarded to students entering semester levels 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. Students will be eligible for only two Adelaide Hoodless Proficiency Scholarships. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students with a minimum general average of 70% standing showing general proficiency in both curricular and extracurricular activities should apply.
Semester: 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Amount: $500 each.

Marie-Pier Lamoureax-Jones Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends in memory of Marie-Pier Lamoureux-Jones, a 1988 graduate of the Applied Human Nutrition major in the B.A.Sc. Program. A student may only receive this scholarship once.

Qualifications: Full-time undergraduate student entering semester 5, 6 or 7, who is enrolled in the Applied Human Nutrition major in the B.A.Sc. Program. The scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest cumulative academic standing.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $1,000.

Vera Ayres MacBeth Scholarship

Mr. Bernard Ward has established this scholarship in memory of the late Mrs. Vera Ayres MacBeth, a 1923 graduate of the Macdonald Institute.

Qualifications: Full-time student with high academic standing.
Semester: 2, 3.
Amount: Scholarship of $400.

Mac '41 Marketing Scholarship
Qualifications: Family and Consumer Studies student who has completed the course "Family in the Canadian Economy" (26-310) and is registered in the marketing major of the Bachelor of Commerce program. The recipient of the award will have received the highest grade in 26-310 in the previous year.
Amount: $300 scholarship.

Macdonald Awards

Offered by the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students from Ontario who have successfully completed their first two semesters of the program in Family and Consumer Studies. Other qualifications being equal, preference will be given to students who have participated in the Ontario 4-H program and to students whose mothers are Women's Institute members. A student who has previously been awarded a W.I. scholarship is ineligible for a Macdonald Award.
Semester: 2.
Amount: Several annual awards of $500.

MAC-FACS Alumni Assn. Centennial Scholarship

Established by the Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association, this scholarship is given to a Treaty or non-Treaty Indian or an Inuit Eskimo. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by September 15. If no applications are received, one half of the income will be awarded to each of two incoming undergraduate students in either the Spring or Fall semester.

Qualifications: Student who is registered in the undergraduate program in Family and Consumer Studies, or as a graduate student.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: Scholarship of approximately $300.

MAC-FACS Alumni Assn. Scholarship
Qualifications: Student with high academic standing at the completion of the 2nd semester level of the Family and Consumer Studies program.
Semester: 2.
Amount: One annual scholarship of $300.

MAC-FACS Alumni Assn. Scholarship

Awarded in the Fall semester.

Qualifications: Student with a cumulative average of 80% entering the 5th or 6th semester of the Family and Consumer Studies program.
Semester: 4, 5.
Amount: Scholarship of $500.

MAC-FACS Mature Student Bursary

Applications must be submitted to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by September 15 for the Fall semester; by January 15 for the Winter semester; and by May 15 for the Spring semester.

Qualifications: Student who demonstrates financial need and who qualifies for mature student status. The student must be admitted to the B.A.Sc. program, or, already holding a degree, must be admitted as an unclassified student to take a program of courses in the area of Family and Consumer Studies. Applicants must be registered for a minimum of two courses per semester. No individual may receive the bursary more than three times.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: A bursary of $200 will be awarded three times per year (once in each semester).

Virginia McEwen Memorial Scholarships

An endowment has been established by the family and friends of Virginia McEwen, an alumna of Macdonald Institute, Class of '57 (B.H.Sc.), recipient of a University of Guelph Master's degree in 1971 and an enthusiastic participant in a wide range of activities of the University of Guelph Alumni Association for many years.

Qualifications: Outstanding students in the B.A.Sc. co-op program. The first scholarship is awarded on admission to a student's first co-op work semester on the basis of academic performance in all courses completed prior to the first co-op work semester. The second scholarship is awarded to a student entering the second co-op work semester, based on an outstanding rating both on the student's Work Report and the Supervisor's Report on the student's performance, as well as on the basis of academic performance in all courses completed prior to the second co-op work semester.
Amount: Two annual scholarships of $750.

Mildred Taylor Misener Bursaries

Dr. Andrew Grant Misener, an alumnus of the University of Guelph, has provided this endowment fund. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services, Office of Registrarial Services.

Qualifications: Students in the B.A.Sc. program with established financial need.
Semester: All semesters.

Nelson Women's Institute Bursary

Established by the Nelson branch of the Halton District Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. Enquiries should be made to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Mature student enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate program offered by the College of Family and Consumer Studies.
Amount: Annual bursary.

Ottawa-Carleton 1983 International Ploughing Match Scholarships

Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students from the Ottawa-Carleton region in the year they have completed semester 2 in the B.A.Sc. program and who have a cumulative average of 70% (minimum) standing in semesters 1 and 2. Participation in extracurricular activities and financial need will be considered.
Semester: 2.
Amount: Two scholarships of $1,000.

Gertrude R. Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Qualifications: Student in the Applied Human Nutrition major who obtains the highest mark in the course 71-304, Nutritional Aspects of Disease. In the case of a tie, the award will be given to the student with the highest cumulative average.
Semester: 6.
Amount: $500.

Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul Bursary

Provided by Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul of OAC '26 and MAC '27 respectively. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student enrolled in any program offered by the College of Family and Consumer Studies. Students who have completed semester 4 (20 courses) and who have demonstrated financial need are eligible.
Amount: Bursary of $500.

Gerhard Scherf Memorial Scholarship

An annual award has been established by Family and Consumer Studies Student Association Council in memory of the late Professor Scherf. Students are to be nominated by their peers.

Qualifications: Awarded to a student who has successfully completed 30 course credits (normally in the seventh semester) in the FACS B.A.Sc. or B.Comm. programs with a cumulative average of 70% or higher and who has made an outstanding contribution to FACS. To be eligible, a student must have served for at least one year as a member of FACS SAC and participated in other FACS activities.
Amount: $200.

Sister Mary Frederick Sheehan Award

Established by the Ontario Dietetic Association Public Service Foundation in memory of the humane and professional leadership shown by Sister Mary Frederick Sheehan through her work at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto.

Qualifications: Students graduating from the College of Family and Consumer Studies in either Applied Human Nutrition or Institutional Foodservice Management and who have been accepted to an administrative or clinical dietetic internship are eligible. The recipient will be the student with the highest academic standing.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Annual award of $250.

May B. Stewart Scholarships

Established through the W.C. Macdonald Company of Montreal.

Qualifications: Students with the highest cumulative average in the Child Studies, Family and Social Relations and Gerontology majors entering semester level 5, 6, or 7. Students may receive only one May B. Stewart Scholarship.
Semester: 4, 5, 6.
Amount: Two scholarships of $200.

Mrs. Elsa Hevenor Stewart Scholarships

Endowment fund provided by Mrs. Elsa H. Stewart of Pakenham, Ontario.

Qualifications: Students with the highest academic standing in the previous two semesters.
Semester: 5, 6, and 7.
Amount: Ten scholarships of $100.

Walter M. Stewart Scholarships

Established and offered through the W.C. Macdonald Company of Montreal.

Qualifications: Students with the highest cumulative average in the Consumer Studies major who are entering semester level 5, 6 or 7. Students may receive only one Walter M. Stewart Scholarship.
Semester: 4, 5, 6.
Amount: Two scholarships of $200.

Stoney Creek Women's Institute Bursaries

Established by the Stoney Creek Women's Institute to commemorate the Sixtieth Anniversary of its founding. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by September 15.

Qualifications: Students from the region of Hamilton-Wentworth in the Family and Consumer Studies program whose scholastic standing is satisfactory and who requires financial aid.
Semester: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Amount: Two bursaries of $250.

Joan (Ellerington) Tanner Memorial Scholarship

This endowment fund has been established by her family in memory of Mrs. Joan (Ellerington) Tanner, a 1957 graduate of the Macdonald Institute.

Qualifications: Student graduating in any given academic year with the highest academic standing in the last 4 semesters of the B.A.Sc. program.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Annual award of $1,000.

Margaret Walker Memorial Scholarship

Donated by the Walker Family in memory of Margaret Walker, who took a great interest in Nutrition Education. Apply to Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student with a cumulative B+ average who is enrolled in the Community Nutrition major offered by the Department of Family Studies. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance and have demonstrated commitment to volunteer activities.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $500.

Janet M. Wardlaw Medal
Qualifications: Presented to the College of Family and Consumer Studies nominee for the Winegard Medal.
Amount: Medal.

Helen G. West Memorial Scholarship

Established by the families of Helen G. West, a Mac '30 graduate who was very active as a volunteer in support of Alumni activities for the University of Guelph. Apply to the FACS College Awards Committee by April 1.

Qualifications: Student in semester 6 or higher of the B.A.Sc. Program. The scholarship recipient will be determined on the basis of academic standing and participation at a leadership level in extracurricular activities.
Amount: $1,000 scholarship.
