Bachelor of Commerce

Entrance Awards

L. A. Beattie & J. C. Beattie Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Lillie Ann Beattie and Jeannie Cockburn Beattie by the estate of Jessie L. Beattie. The scholarship is awarded in alternating years in the B.A.Sc. and B.Comm programs. To be awarded in the B.A.Sc.. program in 1997.

Qualifications: Student entering the College of Family and Consumer Studies and who achieved the highest mark in English during the final year of high school. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to students from rural areas.
Amount: Scholarship in the amount of $300.

Clara E. Elliott Entrance Scholarships

The scholarship is payable in 4 instalments of $2,000 in each of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semester levels. To maintain the scholarship the recipient must continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given.

Qualifications: Awarded to 3 full-time students entering the College of Family & Consumer Studies with minimum average of 80% and who have demonstrated leadership potential.
Amount: Three scholarships of $8,000.

Adelaide Hoodless Entrance Scholarships

Funds were made available from the estate of the late Muriel I. Bostwick, in memory of the late Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless.

Qualifications: Students must have applied to either the B.A.Sc. program or the B. Comm. program, marketing major. The award will be made in 2 instalments of $750 each in the student's first 2 semesters, provided that an average of 70% is obtained in the first semester.
Amount: Five entrance scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each.

Amos & William Lowe Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by the late William B. Lowe of Fort Francis, Ontario. Preference will be given first to eligible students from the district of Rainy River, then from the district of Kenora or Thunder Bay, and finally from the remaining districts of Northern Ontario.

Qualifications: Student entering any of the undergraduate degree programs of the Ontario Agricultural College.
Amount: Scholarship of $1,400.

OAC Alumni Foundation Entrance Scholarships

Offered by the OAC Alumni Foundation. The award will be made in 2 instalments of $1,200 payable after registration in each of the 1st, and 3rd semester levels. Apply to the Dean's Office, Johnston Hall by September 30.

Qualifications: OAC students entering the B.L.A., B.Sc.(Agr.), B.A., B.Sc., or B.Comm. programs who have an admission average in excess of 80%. Participation in extracurricular activities, community activities and demonstrated leadership skills will also be considered. To maintain the scholarship, a recipient must continue with satisfactory academic standing in a degree program in the Ontario Agricultural College.
Amount: Five entrance scholarships of $2,400 each.

In-Course Awards

Alma Mater B.Comm. Management Economics in Industry and Finance Scholarships

Provided by alumni through the Alma Mater Fund. Students who have received another award equal to or exceeding $2,000/annum are ineligible.

Qualifications: Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce Management Economics in Industry and Finance program and who have a minimum cumulative 80% average to the end of semester five.
Semester: 5.
Amount: Two scholarships of $375.

Atlific Inc. Scholarships

Offered in the Fall semester.

Qualifications: Students registered in the B.Comm. program (HAFA) who had the highest average in Financial Accounting (02-222) and Hotel and Restaurant Management Accounting (54-307) in the preceding year.
Semester: 6.
Amount: Two annual awards of $500.

J. Ross Cavers International Exchange Scholarship

Provided by OAC '53 in memory of J. Ross Cavers, their honorary year member and University Professor Emeritus to assist an undergraduate student in OAC with travel and/or housing costs associated with a semester or more of academic study or cooperative work experience through a recognized university outside Canada. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students must have completed 15 semester courses and have a standing in their undergraduate course work. Preference will be given to a candidate who has exhibited qualities of leadership.
Amount: $1,000.

Certified Management Accountants Grand River Chapter Bursary

Offered by the Grand River Chapter of the Society of Management Accountants. Eligible students are those who have graduated from secondary schools in the counties of Perth, Wellington or the regional municipality of Waterloo. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by October 31st.

Qualifications: Student registered in the B.Comm. program who has demonstrated need of financial assistance.
Semester: All semesters.
Amount: Annual bursary of $300.

Class of 1905 Scholarship

Established by the graduating class of 1905. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Student who has completed the 6th semester level in a major in an OAC department and is considered to be the most outstanding student in the class and who, through activity in all branches of college life, as well as proficiency in scholarship during the program, has done most for the college, for fellow students and for personal development.
Semester: 6.
Amount: Scholarship of $150.

Class of '51 OAC Leadership Awards

Established by Year '51 OAC, on the occasion of its 45th anniversary. At the discretion of the OAC Awards Committee students may be selected before graduation. Apply by letter to the OAC Student Federation, Johnston Hall by March 1.

Qualifications: Students graduating from the degree program in a major in an OAC department who have a 70% standing in the final year of study and who have demonstrated leadership in the College or University extracurricular activities.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Three annual awards of $1,000.

Class 1955 OAC Scholarship

Offered by the Class 1955 OAC. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Outstanding OAC degree student at the conclusion of semester 4. The recipient will have made an outstanding contribution to college life through academic proficiency and participation in extracurricular activities and can be considered to have done the most for the College, for fellow students and for personal development.
Semester: 4.
Amount: Scholarship of $1,400.

Class '67 OAC Centennial Scholarship

Offered by the Class of '67 OAC. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Student in a major in an OAC department who through activity in all branches of college life as well as scholastic achievement has made an outstanding contribution to the University.
Semester: 6.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $500.

Class '76 Graduation Prize

This prize is not tenable with the Charles McGowan Prize or the Beth Duncan Gold Medalist.

Qualifications: Outstanding graduating student in a major in an OAC department who has been active in OAC student activities while maintaining a minimum of 70% standing.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Annual prize of $100.

Commonwealth Hospitality Scholarship

Offered in the Winter semester. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by January 31.

Qualifications: Student with a high academic standing who is registered in his/her final semester (normally in the eighth semester) in the B.Comm. (HAFA) program. Participation and leadership in extracurricular activities at the University and the hospitality industry are also considered.
Semester: 8.
Amount: $900 annually.

Deloitte Touche Scholarship

Preference will be given to students with an interest in International Agriculture. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student majoring in Agricultural Economics or Agricultural Business who has completed semester 6. Academic standing and demonstrated leadership qualities will be the criteria used to determine the recipient.
Semester: 6.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $750.

Four Seasons Hotels Hospitality Scholarship

Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by October 1.

Qualifications: Student registered in the B.Comm. (HAFA) program, who has successfully completed a minimum of 29 course credits (normally in the seventh semester) by September 1 and has maintained a 'B' average in Hotel and Restaurant Management Accounting (54-307), Human Resources Management (54-300) and Business Law (26-304). In addition applicants must submit an essay (maximum 6 pages typed, double-spaced) relating these subjects to day-to-day hospitality business management.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $1000.

Grand River Chapter (Society of Management Accountants of Ontario) Bursary

Donated by the Grand River Chapter of the Society of Management Accountants of Ontario. Preference will be given to students who attended a secondary school in the County of Perth, Waterloo or Wellington. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Full-time student in financial need and registered in the B.Comm. program.
Amount: Annual bursary in the amount of $375.

Growmark Scholarship

Growmark and some of its member co-operatives annually provide scholarships . The award may be held only once. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 4 or 6 of the B.Sc.(Agr.) Degree or B.Comm. Degree with a major in Agricultural Business, or semester 2 of the Diploma in Agriculture program. One scholarship will be awarded in the Diploma program and two in the Degree programs, one at the conclusion of semester 4, one at the conclusion of semester 6. Students must have at least a cumulative average of 70% and have demonstrated leadership and involvement in one or more of extracurricular activities, community service, or agricultural employment.
Amount: Three scholarships of $800 each

HAFA Alumni Association Life Membership Prize

One life membership in the HAFA Alumni Association will be awarded to a graduating student in recognition of his/her involvement in the life of HAFA and/or the University. Apply by January 31 using the standard application form attaching a resume and detailed list of extracurricular activities to the Awards Committee of the School of Hotel and Food Administration.

Qualifications: Awarded to a graduating B.Comm. student of the Hotel and Food Administration who has at least a 70% average. Selection will be based on extracurricular activities.

Hotel Human Resource Professionals Association of Greater Metropolitan Toronto Award

Apply by January 31 to the Director's Office, School of Hotel and Food Administration, using the standard application form including a resume and a report on the work experience or project.

Qualifications: Offered to a student in the School of Hotel and Food Administration who has at least a combined B+ average in the courses Organizational Design and Effectiveness (54-220) and Human Resource Management (54-300). As well, the student must have either work experience in the human resource area, or have worked in the hospitality and tourism industry (and have successfully completed a human resource-related project either on the job or in the relevant course work).
Amount: $500

MAC '41 Marketing Scholarship

Established by MAC '41.

Qualifications: Family & Consumer Studies student who has completed the course 26-310 Family in the Canadian Economy and is registered in the marketing major of the B.Comm. program. The recipient of the award will have received the highest grade in 26-310 in the previous year.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $300.

Jack Madden Medal in Economic History
Qualifications: Student in honours Economics at the completion of the Winter semester, or who has graduated in the previous Fall or Spring semester, who has demonstrated high academic standing at the University of Guelph.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Medal and $200.

G.H. Mann Food Service Scholarship

Preference will be given to a student who has contributed to the on going success of the Hospitality Services Department of the University. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by January 31. Next offered in 1998.

Qualifications: Student who is registered in semester 8 of the B.Comm. (HAFA) program and has a minimum cumulative average of 70%. In addition, the recipient will have an interest in, and have participated in, activities conducive to a career in the foodservice industry.
Amount: Biennial scholarship of $300.

Dawn Morris Memorial Award

In memory of Dawn Morris, who spent 35 years in farm show business and was former Manager of the Canadian International Farm Equipment Show in Toronto.

Qualifications: Student who is graduating from the Agricultural Business major of the B. Comm. degree of the Agricultural Economics major in the B.Sc.(Agr.) degree with a minimum B+ average. Selection will be on the basis of relevant course work in agricultural marketing, extracurricular participation and employment activities. Students are encouraged to submit information on extracurricular activities to the OAC Dean's Office one month prior to their Convocation.
Amount: $1,000 award.

OAC Alumni Foundation Leadership Awards

Apply ot the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: OAC degree students (agricultural science, environmental science, agricultural business, landscape architecture, science) who have completed four full-time semesters or equivalent with a cumulative average of at least 70%. Students should include with their application a statement of their accomplishments during their first four semesters in the area of personal development and list their leadership development activities.
Amount: Five annual awards of $1,000.

OAC Centennial Graduate Fellowships

The Ontario Agricultural College celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 1974. Many organizations and companies associated with agricultural industry provided funds in conjunction with the Centennial activities. These scholarship have been established in perpetuity as a permanent commemoration of the Centennial of the College. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students graduating from a degree program administered by the Ontario Agricultural College and who plan to pursue graduate studies in any department or school of the Ontario Agricultural College in the year of baccalaureate graduation are eligible for these fellowships. The fellowship will be based on academic achievement in semesters 7 and 8, as well as participation in extracurricular activities throughout the student's university career.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Two scholarships of $1500.

OAC '52 Student Assistance Fund

Offered by OAC '52 on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. Apply by letter, accompanied by a Student Budget/Bursary application form, to Student Financial Services by December 15. Budget/Bursary application forms are obtainable from the Student Financial Services Office, 3rd Floor, U.C..

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree students who have completed two or more semesters in an academic program administered by OAC and who are in good academic standing.
Amount: Bursary.

OAC Students' Federation Medal
Qualifications: Graduating student in an undergraduate degree program with a major in an OAC department who has been an outstanding leader in student activities at the College level throughout his or her University career.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Medal awarded annually.

Ontario Cattlemen's Association Scholarships

Normally one student from each department will be selected. These students must have been raised on a farm in Ontario. Academic standing and participation in community leadership will be taken into account. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester level 4 in Agricultural Science or Agricultural Business.
Semester: 4.
Amount: Three annual awards of $500.

C. W. Riley Prize

The C. W. Riley Prize was established by a number of his friends and associates.

Qualifications: Student who, on graduation from Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Business or Resource Economics and Rural Development major, attains the highest proficiency in the area subjects.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Annual prize of $250.

Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul Bursary

Offered by Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul of OAC '26 and MAC '27 respectively. Students who have completed semester 4 (20 courses) and who have demonstrated financial need are eligible. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student enrolled in any program offered by the College of Family and Consumer Studies.
Amount: Bursary of $500.

Robb Travel Grants

Travel grants have been provided by the estate of Martha Robb, Paris, Ontario, in recognition of her love of agriculture. Apply to the Dean, OAC by April 15.

Qualifications: OAC students who are attending another university on a Letter of Permission.
Amount: 80% of the travel costs will be covered up to $750 per student.

Gerhard Scherf Memorial Scholarship

Established by Family and Consumer Studies Student Association Council in memory of the late Professor Scherf. Students are to be nominated by their peers.

Qualifications: Student who has successfully completed 30 course credits (normally in the seventh semester) in the FACS B.A.Sc. or B.Comm. programs with a cumulative average of 70% or higher and who has made an outstanding contribution to FACS. To be eligible, a student must have served for at least one year as a member of FACS SAC and participated in other FACS' activities.
Amount: Annual award of $200.

Dorothy Shantz Memorial Scholarship

Established by the National Foundation of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Association. Apply to the HAFA Office by October 1.

Qualifications: Student registered in the B.Comm. (HAFA) program who successfully completed 30 course credits (normally in the seventh semester) with a minimum cumulative average of 70%, and who shows enthusiasm for the foodservice industry. The recipient must have demonstrated leadership ability by holding an executive position on the student organization of HAFA.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $1000 and an engraved plaque.

Kae and Gordon Skinner Memorial Scholarship

Provided by the late Kae Stalker Skinner (Mac '30) and Gordon Skinner (OAC '24), former Registrar of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists. Consideration will be given to participation in the Student Branch of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: OAC student graduating from the B.Sc.(Agr.), B.Sc., or B.Comm. programs who has made a significant contribution to developing an understanding of the profession of agrology among fellow students.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Scholarship of $600.

E.D. Smith Scholarship in Foodservice Administration

Offered by E.D. Smith and Sons Ltd., a multi-faceted processor of foods. Apply to HAFA Awards Committee by January 31 including a resume and statement of interest in the foodservice industry.

Qualifications: Student who has demonstrated an interest in the foodservice industry, has maintained a minimum of 'B' average and has completed 15 to 20 courses of a major offered by the School of Hotel and Food Administration. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of interest in foodservice operations and academic standing. Interest in the foodservice industry can be demonstrated by work experience or active membership in the Canadian Food Service Executives Association (C.F.S.E.A.)
Amount: Annual scholarship of $1000.

Jim Stokman Memorial Scholarship

Mrs. Stokman and family, including sons Nick (OAC '77) and Andrew (OAC '84) have established this award in memory of her husband and their father to recognize his lifetime contribution to the family farm. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Available to OAC students who have completed semester 2 with at least 'B' average in one of the following programs: B.Sc.(Agr.); B.Comm; B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Env.). Students must have come from a rural background and have demonstrated community/student involvement both during high school and the first two semesters of University.
Amount: $500 annually

John Sutherland Sr. Memorial Prize

Offered by John Sutherland and Sons, in memory of John Sutherland Sr.. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Graduating student in a major in an OAC department, who has completed a minimum of 3 courses in English and/or Communications and has attained the highest average grade using the best 3 courses, one of which must be English.
Semester: 8.
Amount: Prize of $500.

C. M. Switzer Scholarships
Qualifications: One to a student who has completed semester 2 of the Diploma in Agriculture program and one to a student who has completed semester 4 of a degree program in OAC. Recipients will have a minimum of 70% standing and have demonstrated outstanding leadership ability in OAC student organizations, class executives and College Royal.
Semester: 4.
Amount: Two scholarships of $2,000.

Elizabeth M. (Betty) Upton Memorial Travel Grant

Established in memory of Elizabeth M. Upton, a faculty member in the School of Hotel and Food Administration, who played a key role in the development of the School and was instrumental in the development of the Institutional Foodservice Management (I.F.M.) major. Apply by letter, by October 1, describing the travel, the expected benefit and including a budget and the HAFA Financial Data Form.

Qualifications: Student who demonstrates financial need for travel to a relevant professional conference or to a University of Guelph academic program outside Canada. Students must have completed two or more semesters in the HAFA graduate or undergraduate program and must be in good academic standing. The project or conference must be acceptable to the Director of the School of Hotel and Food Administration to whom applications should be made.
Amount: Travel grant.

Varley and Lyon Exchange Scholarships

Miss Bertha Manent of New York City has established three Mrs. Lillie-Jane Lyon Varley and Clarence D. Lyon Exchange scholarships. Apply to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Services by April 1, including a letter from the Dean or Director approving the proposed program of study.

Qualifications: OAC students who are pursuing a course of study for one or two semesters at another college or faculty of agriculture in Canada or in another country. Such course of study must lead to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Agricultural Business or the Diploma in Agriculture at the University of Guelph.
Semester: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Amount: $750 each.

Janet M. Wardlaw Medal

Presented to the College of Family and Consumer Studies nominee for the Winegard Medal.

Amount: Medal.
