Department of English, College of Arts

The Department of English offers courses, especially at the 100 and 200 level, suitable for non-specialized students as well as for those in English programs. Any student in English or majoring in another field who is in doubt about being well prepared for a particular course at any level should consult with either the instructor or an advisor in the department. Students should note that certain courses in Drama (35-) and in Literature in Translation (24-, 47-, 55-, 88-) may be counted towards a degree in English. Consult the Department of English for details.

General Program Area of Concentration

1. First Year requirement 37-120 or 37-140.
2. Early Literature requirement 37-140 or 37-205.
3. Critical Practice requirement 37-210 or 37-2111/2.

• In addition, students must complete a minimum of 6 English courses at the 300 level or above.
• In addition, the courses taken must satisfy the regulations laid down for Emphasis A or Emphasis B, as follows.

• Emphasis A (providing an emphasis on 1 or more of American, Canadian, and Commonwealth Literatures)
• At least 1 of the following: 37-220, 37-255, 37-264
• A minimum of four 300 level (or above) courses in American, Canadian, or Commonwealth Literature.
• A minimum of two 300 level (or above) courses involving pre-20th Century Literature (including at least 1 British).
• In addition, students must ensure that at least 1 of these courses, at the 300 level or above, involves a substantial component of poetry, that 1 involves a substantial component of drama, and that 1 involves a substantial component of fiction. Course outlines and registration material will indicate which genre(s) the course will address in a substantial way.

• Emphasis B (involving an emphasis on British Literature):
• A minimum of four 300 level (or above) courses in British Literature prior to 1900, including 1 in Medieval/Renaissance and 1 in 17th/18th Century Literature.
• A minimum of two 300 level (or above) courses in American, Canadian, Commonwealth, or 20th Century British Literature.
• In addition, students must ensure that at least 1 of these courses, at the 300 level or above, involves a substantial component of poetry, that 1 involves a substantial component of drama, and that 1 involves a substantial component of fiction. Course outlines and registration material will indicate which genre(s) the course will address in a substantial way.

• In addition, students must complete a minimum of 10 English courses at the 300 level or above, including at least 2 at the 400 level ; these 10 or more courses must include the following:
• One course in Medieval or Renaissance Literature
• One course in 17th or 18th Century Literature
• One course in 19th Century British Literature
• One other pre-20th Century Literature course
• One course in American Literature
• Two courses in Canadian and/or Commonwealth Literatures
• One 300 level seminar from 37-392, 37-393, 37-397, 37-398 preferably taken in the 5th or 6th semester.
• In addition, students must ensure that at least 2 of these upper level courses involve a substantial component of poetry, that 2 involve a substantial component of drama, and that 2 involve a substantial component of fiction. Course outlines and registration material will indicate which genre(s) the course will address in a substantial way.

Honours students interested in a more concentrated program or contemplating graduate work in English are strongly advised to do the following:

• Attain a good reading knowledge of another language, such as French
• Take 37-2111/2
• Take at least 1 course in Chaucer, 1 in Shakespeare, 1 in Renaissance Non-Dramatic Literature, 1 in 18th Century Literature, 1 in Romanticism, 1 in Victorian Prose or Poetry and 1 in Canadian Literature.
• Take 37-369. (History of Literary Criticism) and 37-469 (Contemporary Literary Theory).
• Take at least four 400 level courses (37-481 and 37-491 are recommended).

The M.A. program in English at Guelph gives preference to qualified applicants with a broad experience in literary and cultural studies and related disciplines.

Honours Program Minor

The program of study and requirements are the same as for the area of concentration in the general program.
