English

Department of English, College of Arts

The Department of English offers courses, especially at the 100 and 200 level, suitable for non-specialized students as well as for those in English programs. Any student in English or majoring in another field who is in doubt about being well prepared for a particular course at any level should consult with either the instructor or an advisor in the department. Students should note that certain courses in Drama (35-) and in Literature in Translation (24-, 47-, 55-, 88-) may be counted towards a degree in English. Consult the Department of English for details.

General Program Area of Concentration

A minimum of 12 English courses is required, including:

  1. First Year requirement 37-120 or 37-140.
  2. Early Literature requirement 37-140 or 37-205.
  3. Critical Practice requirement 37-210 or 37-2111/2.

Honours Program Major

A minimum of 18 English courses is required, including:

  1. First Year requirement37-120 or 37-140.
  2. Early Literature requirement 37-140 or 37-205.
  3. Critical Practice requirement 37-210 or 37-2111/2.

Honours students interested in a more concentrated program or contemplating graduate work in English are strongly advised to do the following:

The M.A. program in English at Guelph gives preference to qualified applicants with a broad experience in literary and cultural studies and related disciplines.

Honours Program Minor

The program of study and requirements are the same as for the area of concentration in the general program.
