Family and Child Studies

Department of Family Studies, College of Family and Consumer Studies

Family and Child Studies is offered as a minor in the honours program. It is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary studies which have a specific focus on human development over the life span and on the applied questions which relate to the needs of children and the functioning of families. Elective courses may be chosen to emphasize the family, the child, or a combination of the two. Students seeking counselling should consult with a departmental advisor in the Department of Family Studies.

Honours Program Minor

A minimum of 10 courses is required, including:
21-227 Development in Early and Middle Childhood *
39-101 Human Development
39-201 Couple and Family Relationships
39-304 Parenting: Research and Applications
71-101 Nutrition and Society
A further 5 courses offered by the Department of Family Studies (21-xxx, 39-xxx, or 71-205 Family and Community Nutrition), of which at least 3 must be at the 300 level or above including at least 1 at the 400 level.
*Where students have or plan to have credit for 80-245 Introduction to Developmental Psychology, an alternative course to 21-227 must be selected, in consultation with the departmental advisor, from those offered under the Child Studies (21-), or Family Studies (39-) listings.
