Interdisciplinary Program

The International Development program is intended to provide students with an opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary and comparative studies of long-term change and international inequality.
A broad coverage of the process of international development, from the perspectives of history and social science, forms the basis for more in-depth study on such topics as economic growth, the biophysical environment, women, agriculture and rural life, politics, administration and the Latin American region.
The primary participating departments are Economics, Geography, Political Studies, and Sociology and Anthropology.
A minimum of 26 courses is required, including:
Fourteen core courses and one of six areas of emphasis. The areas are: Economic Growth and Development, Women in the Development Process, Rural and Agricultural Development, Biophysical Environment and Development, Latin American Studies and Political Development and Administrative Change. Students must select their area of emphasis by the end of the 4th semester of university study.
CIDS students are encouraged to acquire at least one foreign language and to work or study abroad. See Section V, Special Study Opportunities, Exchange and Study Abroad.
With the permission of the International Development Studies academic advisor, students may replace one restricted elective course from their area of emphasis with 85-320.
*Students must complete this course before semester 5.
Economic Growth and Development
One course with a regional or country focus approved by the International Development advisor.
