Bachelor of Science

Entrance Scholarships

Samuel Acker Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is not tenable with other Senate awards. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program in the College of Physical and Engineering Science. Preference may be given to students whose home residence is in either Wellington, Waterloo or Perth County.
Amount: One award of $400

Alma Mater Entrance Scholarship in Human Kinetics

One scholarship is offered by the Alma Mater Fund Advisory Council. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program who declares the intention to pursue a major in Human Kinetics.
Amount: One award of $750

W.C. Blackwood Memorial Entrance Scholarship in Physics

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program, who declares the intention to pursue an honours program in Physics.
Amount: One award of $450

December 6th Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established by the Faculty Association, is awarded in memory of the fourteen women murdered in December 1989 at École Polytechnique and is intended to attract women to a profession which is largely comprised of men. $500 will be awarded in each of semesters 1, 3 and 5. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Female student who is a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada enrolled in the College of Physical and Engineering Science. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance. For continued eligibility beyond semester 1, the student must maintain a minimum of 70% cumulative average. Demonstrated financial need may also be considered.
Amount: One award of $1,500

Guelph Alma Mater Science Scholarships

Offered by the Alma Mater Fund Advisory Council. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program

Honours Chemistry or Honours Biochemistry Scholarship

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program. The student must declare the intention to pursue an honours program in Chemistry or Biochemistry. The award will be made in 2 instalments of $250 each in the student's first 2 semesters provided an average of 80% is obtained in the 1st semester.
Amount: One award of $500

Honours Mathematics or Honours Statistics Scholarship

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program who declares the intention to pursue an honours program in Mathematics or Statistics. The scholarship will be made in 2 instalments of $250 in each of the student's first 2 semesters with the second instalment to be conditional upon the student obtaining an average of 80% in the 1st semester.
Amount: One award of $500

Honours Physics Scholarships

Offered by the Department of Physics, these awards will be made based on the student's admission average and paid in a number of instalments (for example, $2,000 in year 1 and $1,000 in each years 2, 3 and 4 for a $5,000 scholarship; $1,000 in year 1, $800 in year 2, $600 in each of years 3 and 4 for a $3,000 scholarship; $1,000 in year 1, $800 in year 2 and $600 in year 3 for a $2,400 scholarship; and $1,000 in year 1 and $800 in year 2 for a $1,800 scholarship). Second and subsequent instalments will be given subject to the student continuing full-time with at least a 70% average in an physics major program, and taking the physics courses required in that program. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program with high academic standing and a declared intention of pursuing an major in Physics, Biophysics, Chemical Physics, or Theoretical Physics, or a Co-op stream of these programs.
Amount: A number of awards of between $1,800 and $5,000 depending on admission average

Frederick Hutt Scholarships

Dr. Frederick B. Hutt, OAC '23 and Professor Emeritus of Animal Genetics at Cornell University offers this scholarship. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students from Wellington County entering the College of Biological Science program with a minimum admission average of 85%.
Amount: Two awards of $500

Amos & William Lowe Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship endowed by the late William B. Lowe of Fort Francis, Ontario. Preference will be given first to eligible students from the District of Rainy River, then from the District of Kenora or Thunder Bay, and finally from the remaining Districts of Northern Ontario. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering any of the undergraduate degree programs of the Ontario Agricultural College.
Amount: Two awards of $1,250 paid in two installments of $625

Earl B. MacNaughton Entrance Scholarships

Emphasis will be given to performance in high school science and mathematics. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students with high academic standing and entering an honours program in the College of Physical and Engineering Science.
Amount: Four awards of $1,000

Gordon McNally Memorial Award

In memory of Gordon McNally, Professor of Zoology in the Ontario Agricultural College (1934-1971) and College of Biological Science (1971-1979), who had a great interest in extracurricular activities. Applications by students or recommendations by high school teachers should be made to Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by May 1.

Qualifications: Students entering any undergraduate program in the College of Biological Science. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance and demonstration of outstanding contributions to extracurricular activities and/or community services.
Amount: One award of $300

OAC Alumni Foundation Entrance Scholarships

The award will be made in 2 instalments of $1,200 payable after registration in each of the 1st, and 3rd semester levels. To maintain the scholarship, a recipient must continue with satisfactory academic standing in a degree program in the Ontario Agricultural College. Apply to the OAC Dean's Office, Johnston Hall, by September 30.

Qualifications: OAC students entering the B.A., B.Comm., B.L.A., B.Sc., B.Sc.(Agr.), or B.Sc.(Env.) programs who have an admission average in excess of 80%. Participation in extracurricular activities, community activities and demonstrated leadership skills will also be considered.
Amount: Five awards of $2,400

Sleeman Brewing Scholarships

Financial need may be considered. Not tenable with other Senate awards of equal or greater amounts. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students entering a B.Sc. program in the College of Biological Science and College of Physical and Engineering Science respectively.
Amount: Two awards of $2,000

John Vanderkamp Memorial Scholarships

These memorial scholarships were established for academically outstanding students in the Akademia program by family, friends and colleagues of John Vanderkamp, former Chair of the Department of Economics, respected Dean of the former College of Social Science (1981-1991), and an enthusiastic promoter of liberal education as encompassed in the Akademia program. The awards are made in two instalments of $250 payable after registration in the 1st and 2nd semesters. Apply to Student Financial Services by June 30.

Qualifications: Academically outstanding students in the Akademia program. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic standing, significant involvement in extracurricular activities and two reference letters from counsellors, teachers or mentors.

Entrance ACCESS Awards

Fred Hindle Bursary

Awarded in memory of Fred Hindle, OAC '38, a long-time generous supporter of his Alma Mater, who at the time of his death, wanted future students to have the same opportunity for an education as he had received. This bursary is paid in $1,500 instalments in each of the four years of the student's program, dependent on continued demonstration of financial need and successful completion of study to advance into the next year. This bursary is awarded with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply by letter with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by April 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: An entering OAC degree student who has demonstrated financial need. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: One award of $6,000 ($1,500 annually for 4 years)

Gary Knechtel Memorial Scholarship

Established by the Toronto Section of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program, in memory of Gary Knechtel (1943 - 1988) a revered and outstanding leader in the food industry and a long time member of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology. Academic standing in high school OAC subjects and an interest in Food Science will be used to determine the recipient. Subsequent installments are dependent on continued demonstration of financial need and satisfactory progress in Food Science. Apply by letter with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by April 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Students with demonstrated financial need entering the Food Science major in the B.Sc. program. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: One award of $10,000 paid in installments of $2,500 in semesters 1, 3, 5, and 7.

In-course Scholarships

Akademia Appreciation Award

Awarded to a student who has completed semester 2 of the Akademia program. The recipient must have achieved a 70% average in the courses for completion of the Akademia program. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance and contributions to extracurricular activities of the Akademia program

Alma Mater B.Sc. Scholarships

Awarded in the Fall to students who have completed 6 semester levels (15.0 course credit minimum) of an honours B.Sc. program in the College of Biological Science and in the College of Physical and Engineering Science; eight scholarships will be awarded to students in each College. Consideration may be given to the actual courses taken in the case of students with widely differing programs. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Selection of recipients will be based upon the cumulative average obtained during the first 6 semester levels.

Analytical Biochemistry Award

Donated by a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and supported by the Alma Mater Fund. Awarded in the Winter semester to students with the highest grades in 19-357 Analytical Biochemistry. One award will be made in each semester in which the course is offered. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Eligible students must be continuing in an honours or major program administered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Tony Anthony Prize in Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy

In memory of the late Professor E.H. Anthony, Department of Zoology, One award will be made for each semester in which the course is offered. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who achieves the highest grade in course ZOO*2090, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy.
Amount: One award of $125

Kenneth James Berg Memorial Scholarship

Established by Friends and Family in memory of Ken Berg, a 1982 CBS Microbiology alumnus. The focus of this award reflects Ken's success in applied education in the work force. Nomination by Microbiology Co-op Program Committee.

Qualifications: CBS Microbiology student who excels in all aspects of the third co-op work term.
Amount: One award of $1,000

Blackburn Scholarship

In commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of the Ontario Agricultural College, Dr.D.J. Blackburn, a retired faculty member in Rural Extension Studies and former Director of the Associate Diploma Program has established this scholarship. Apply by letter citing athletic contributions to the OAC Awards Committee by April 1.

Qualifications: OAC degree or diploma student who has participated in intercollegiate athletics and maintained a minimum cumulative average of 70% while registered at Guelph. Athletic excellence and leadership will be used to determine the recipient.

W.H. Boyd Scholarship

Established by the friends of Professor W.H. Boyd. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student enrolled in the Human Kinetics major who has completed Human Anatomy and who has made leadership contributions to the University or outside community.

Hugh Branion Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, based on academic achievement in the first 7 semesters. This scholarship is not tenable with the Brian L. Walker Memorial Scholarship. Application not necessary.

Canadian Federation of University Women/Guelph Scholarship

The Guelph Chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women provides this annual scholarship. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Female student registered in semester 5 or 6 in the Fall semester in either B.Sc.(Eng.), B.A. (College of Physical and Engineering Science) or B.Sc. (College of Physical and Engineering Science) who has the highest cumulative average. Preference will be given to a student who has graduated from a secondary school in Wellington County.

Canadian Society of Animal Science Prize

Qualifications: Student in the Animal Science or Animal Biology major who has attained the highest academic standing in the first 6 semesters

Francis E. Chase Memorial Scholarship

Presented in the Fall. The award will be made on the basis of academic standing, leadership in extracurricular activities. Application not necessary.

Chemical Institute of Canada Prize

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering the 7th semester specializing in Chemistry who has the highest standing in the 6th semester subjects taken in the Departments of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

George I. Christie Scholarship

The late George I. Christie, president of OAC from 1928 to 1945, established a trust fund to provide this annual scholarship for graduate work. Applications approved by the Chair, Department of Animal and Poultry Science, should be submitted to the OAC Dean's office by April 1.

Qualifications: Awarded to a student graduating with high standing in an animal and poultry science courses who proposes to pursue graduate studies in animal science at any institution of his/her choice.
Amount: One award of $600

J.M. Christie Prize
Qualifications: Student in the Food Science area of the B.Sc. program with the highest academic standing throughout eight semester levels.

Class of 1905 Scholarship

Established by the graduating class of 1905. Apply to Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Student who has completed the 6th semester of a major in an OAC department, is considered to be the most outstanding student in the class and who, through activity in all branches of college life, as well as proficiency in scholarship during the program, has done most for the College, for fellow students and for personal development.

Class of '51 OAC Leadership Awards

Established by Year '51 OAC, on the occasion of its 45th anniversary. At the discretion of the OAC Awards Committee students may be selected before graduation. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students graduating from the degree program in a major in an OAC department who have a 70% standing in the final year of study and who have demonstrated leadership in the College or University extracurricular activities.

Class 1955 OAC Scholarships

The recipient will have made an outstanding contribution to college life through academic proficiency and participation in extracurricular activities and can be considered to have done the most for the College, for fellow students and for personal development.

CBS Alumni Association Alma Mater Scholarships

Presented by the CBS Alumni Association to full-time students in the College of Biological Science who have been registered for 2 semesters prior to the commencement of the Winter semester. Apply to Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services, by January 31.

Qualifications: The awards are based on the highest average in the previous semester [2.50 credits] and participation in CBS activities. These scholarships are tenable with other senate awards, but not with the College of Biological Science Alumni Association Scholarships.

CBS Alumni Association Scholarships

Scholarships available to Canadian students for one semester are awarded in the Fall to students who have completed semester 4 in the previous Fall, Winter or Spring semesters and are enrolled in semester 5 or higher of a College of Physical and Engineering Science program. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Recipients will be selected on the basis of a high average in courses normally taken in the 3rd and 4th semesters. Students must have been registered in at least [5.00] credits and a minimum 80% average is required.

Isabella Anderson Conway Scholarship

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Awarded to the student in the Nutritional Sciences major who has achieved the highest combined average in the courses NUTR*2150 Introduction to Nutrition and Food Science, NUTR*3190 Fundamentals of Nutrition and 19-258 Introductory Biochemistry.

Copernicus Scholarships in Physics

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 3 and are registered in semester 4 of one of the majors programs in Physics. To be eligible, students must have completed the courses PHYS*2440 and PHYS*2460 with the minimum of an A average. The awards will be made to the students with the highest average in the Physics courses taken in the first and second semesters and in PHYS*2440 and PHYS*2460.
Amount: Four awards of $500

J.D. Cunningham Industrial Scholarship

Apply to Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Awarded to a student with a minimum cumulative average of 75% who has completed semester 6 in Food Science. Work experience in industrial microbiology, participation in extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership skills are also considered.

Egelstaff Scholarship

In honour of University Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Physics, Peter A. Egelstaff. Awarded in the Winter semester. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who has completed Semester 5, is currently registered in one of the majors in Physics and has a high cumulative average (of at least 80%) in the required Physics courses normally taken in semesters 3, 4, and 5 of the major.

George A. Farley Scholarship

Established in memory of George A. Farley, a chemistry graduate of the Class OAC '33, and presented in the Fall. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student enrolled in a Co-op program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and who has completed his/her second work term within the preceding calendar year. Course grades, work term assessments and work term reports will be considered in selecting the Farley scholar. The cumulative academic average must be at least 80%.
Amount: One award of $200

R.A. Fischer Statistics Scholarship

Offered in the Fall. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Full-time student entering the 5th semester of an honours program in Statistics with a cumulative average of 75% or more and who has the highest average in STAT*2040 and STAT*2050 or equivalent.

Amount: One award of $400

Gaskin Medal in Marine and Freshwater Biology

Established to honour Dr. David Gaskin, professor in the Department of Zoology from 1968 - 1998, for his contribution to this field. No application required.

Qualifications: The student who graduates at the completion of the Winter semester, or during the previous Fall or Spring semesters with the highest cumulative average in the Department of Zoology's Marine and Freshwater Biology major.
Amount: One award of $150 and a medal

GIBCO/BRL Microbiology Research Excellence Award

This award is funded by an endowment provided by the GIBCO/BRL Enzyme Freezer Program. Nominations from Faculty supervisors should be submitted to the Chair of the Department of Microbiology between April 15 and April 30 of each year.

Qualifications: Undergraduate student who has produced and presented the best all round research project in MICR*4301 and/or MICR*4320 Research Project I and/or II in Microbiology.
Amount: One award of $300

GlobalTox Award for Academic Excellence

GlobalTox International Consultants Inc. offers this award. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who is registered in the honours toxicology program and has the highest grade in Principles of Toxicology (TOX*2000).

Harold T. Griffin Inc. Scholarships

Harold T. Griffin, Inc. Mississauga, makes these awards available to assist co-op students with the costs associated with relocation for their second work term. Apply to Student Financial Services, by April 1.

This scholarship represents income generated by a trust fund established by Dr. Ko. One annual award is presented in the Winter semester. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student with the highest grade in the parasitology course (ZOO*3010) in the Department of Zoology, currently offered in the Fall semester.

Monroe Landon Memorial Scholarship

The Ontario Agricultural College celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 1974. Many organizations and companies associated with the agricultural industry provided funds in conjunction with the Centennial activities. Ontario Cattlemen's Association Degree Bursaries

Provided by the Ontario Cattlemen's Association and the OAC Alumni Foundation with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply by letter with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Students with demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in semester 5 or above in the B.Sc.(Agr.), B.Comm.(Agricultural Business), B.S.c. (Animal Biology) or B.Sc. (Food Science) program and have a 60% minimum cumulative average. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Four awards of $500

Ontario Federation of Agriculture Bursaries

Provided by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the OAC Alumni Foundation with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply by letter with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: OAC students with demonstrated financial need enrolled in the B.Sc.(Agr.), B.Comm., B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Env.) programs. Preference will be given to students from farm families who have participated in 4H and/or rural community activities. A student may receive up to three bursaries annually ($1,500). Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Twelve awards of $500

Stephen Safe Scholarships in Toxicology

Established by Wellington Laboratories, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program to honour the achievements of Prof. Stephen Safe, a former faculty member at the University of Guelph. One letter of support should be provided from a faculty member who is not a member of the Selection Committee. Apply, including a reference letter and a completed Need Assessment Form, to Student Financial Services by December 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Students with demonstrated financial need in an undergraduate toxicology program at, or beyond, semester 5. Applicants should have achieved a minimum 77% cumulative average in the science courses of the previous two academic semesters. Previous recipients of the award may reapply in subsequent years, but preference will be given to those applicants who have not previously held this award. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Two awards of $1,000

T.K. Warley Bursaries

Established by OAC Alumni Foundation, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program, to recognize Professor T.K. Warley's significant contribution to the OAC Alumni Foundation and to students through teaching and promotion/development of "Experience Agriculture". A degree student may receive this bursary twice. Apply by letter stating qualifications with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Students with demonstrated financial need who are in semester 5 to 8 of any degree program within OAC. A minimum 65% is required, as is participation in student activities, governance, and/or college affairs. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Three bursaries of $500

In-course Bursaries

Catherine Moyer Berg and Brian Berg Memorial Bursary

Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services by October 1.

Qualifications: Presented to a full-time student in the College of Biological Science with demonstrated financial need.
Amount: One bursary of $200

Credit Valley Conservation Authority Foundation Bursary

Apply to Student Financial Services by October 1.

Qualifications: Full-time student registered in B.A. Geography, B.Sc. Geographic Information Systems and Environmental Analysis, B.Sc.(Eng.) Water Resource Engineering, B.Sc. (Agr.) Agroecosystem Management or B.Sc.(Env.) Geography majors with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who resides in a member municipality of the Credit Valley Authority Foundation.
Amount: One award of $500

Gwen Karr Memorial Bursary

Mr. T.K.C. Karr, OAC '32, has provided an endowment fund to assist students in a degree or diploma program of the Ontario Agricultural College. They are distributed at the discretion of the University Bursary Committee. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services by October 1.

Qualifications: OAC students with demonstrated financial need.

Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul Bursary

Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul of OAC 26 and MAC 27 respectively provide this bursary to an OAC student in the Department of Environmental Biology in the B.Sc., B.Sc.(Agr.) or the B.Sc.(Env.) degree programs. Enquiries should be made to Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 4 and who have demonstrated financial need are eligible.
Semester: 4
Amount: One award of $500

Robb Travel Grants

Travel bursaries have been provided by the estate of Martha Robb, Paris, Ontario in recognition of her love of agriculture. Apply to the Dean, OAC by April 15.

Qualifications: OAC students who are attending another university on a Letter of Permission.
Amount: A number of awards of 80% of travel costs up to $750 per student

Dr. W.J.D. Stephen Memorial Bursary

Selection will be made by the CBS Awards Committee. Apply to Student Financial Services, by January 31.

Qualifications: Student majoring in Wildlife biology who is registered in the Winter semester.
Semester: 5 or 6
Amount: One award of $125
