Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Entrance Awards

Jennifer Margaret Francis Memorial Award

This award is normally made once every four years and may be held by the student throughout the DVM program providing both financial need continues and academic performance is maintained. The award is payable over 4 years to a student from the Ottawa-Carleton region entering semester 1 of the DVM program in 1994.

Qualifications: Student from the Ottawa-Carleton region entering semester 1 of the DVM program with financial need and adequate academic performance.
Amount: $6,000 every four years.
Semester: 1

Grey County Cattlemen's Association Entrance Award

The Grey County Cattlemen's Association has donated an entrance scholarship to a student from Grey County entering semester 1 of the DVM program.

Qualifications: Student from Grey County entering semester 1 of the DVM program with the highest average in the courses attempted after admission to the Pre-veterinary Year.
Amount: $100

Elaine Harris Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends of Elaine Harris, who in her short lifetime demonstrated exemplary care and love for all animals, have established a memorial scholarship.

Qualifications: Student entering semester 1 of the DVM program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to the student who has graduated from a program in Animal Health and/or Veterinary Technology.

Elaine Laurin Scholarships

Mrs. Elaine Laurin, because of her compassion for animals, her long standing interest in veterinary medicine and her desire to help talented, but financially constrained, veterinary students, has generously established three continuing awards for students who have been admitted to the Pre-veterinary year and who continue through to completion of the four-year DVM program. The recipients chosen in 1995 will continue to receive the awards each year through to completion of the DVM program, provided they have achieved, on entry to DVM years 1, 2, 3 and 4 averages of at least 80% and demonstrate continued need of substantial financial assistance.

Qualifications: Academic performance and demonstrated financial need.
Amount: Three continuing awards of $5,000 per annum for students who have been admitted to the Pre-veterinary year and who continue through to completion of the 4-year DVM program.

Quinte District Veterinary Medical Association Scholarship

Award provided by the Quinte District Veterinary Association.

Qualifications: Student entering semester 1 of the DVM program with the highest average in the Pre-veterinary year who is a resident of Lennox and Addington, Prince Edward, Hastings or Northumberland Counties.
Amount: $100
Semester: 1

Peter Rich Bursaries

Established by the Jean Rich Foundation, this award is paid out over five years.

Qualifications: Student entering the Pre-veterinary year with demonstrated need of financial assistance.

AAEP Frank J. Milne Memorial Award

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) donates this award in memory of Dr. Frank J. Milne, an OVC faculty member from 1953-1984. Dr. Milne was President of the AAEP in 1971, and a long-time member of the AAEP Executive.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 6 of the DVM program with the highest grade in course 93-445 Equine Medicine and Surgery.

American Animal Hospital Association Prize

Presented by the American Animal Hospital Association.

Qualifications: Student completing semester 8 of the DVM program with the highest clinical proficiency in small animal medicine and surgery.

Amount: $250, one year's free membership to the Association, a plaque and a commendation, announced in the AAHA journal.

Auxiliary to Ontario Veterinarians Award

Endowed by the Auxiliary to Ontario Veterinarians, supporting the profession from 1946 to 1990.

Qualifications: Undergraduate Veterinary student who has completed semester 4 and who has demonstrated the greatest improvement in academic performance between years 1 and 2 of the DVM program

Auxiliary to Ontario Veterinarians Bursary

Endowed by the Auxiliary to Ontario Veterinarians, supporting the profession from 1946 to 1990. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Undergraduate veterinary students who have a record of satisfactory academic performance and who have demonstrated need of financial assistance.

Ayerst Case Report Awards
Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 8 of the DVM program. The recipients will be selected on the basis of the quality of the case report required for completion of course 93-490 Veterinary Externship. One award will be given for a companion animal report and the other for production animal species, namely swine, beef or dairy. The case report must be submitted to the coordinator of the externship course by the end of semester 7.

Jonathan Bloom (OVC '93) and his family have endowed this annual award for graduating students in the DVM program

Qualifications: A graduating DVM student who has completed an approved elective experience outside the institution during their senior year. The recipient will be selected on the basis of the evaluation of performance by the elective host and on the manner in which the Ontario Veterinary College and the profession were represented. Preference will be given to the student who has demonstrated initiative and motivation in a non-traditional elective experience in veterinary medicine.

CALAM Case Report Award

Donated by the Canadian Association of Laboratory Animal Medicine (CALAM). Submit reports to the Dean's Office, OVC, before February 15.

Qualifications: A veterinary student who has submitted the best case report judged on the basis of scientific content, relevance to the field of laboratory animal medicine and quality of the manuscript. The case report must follow the format for publication in the Canadian Veterinary Journal.

Canadian Kennel Club Bursaries

The Canadian Kennel Club provides funds for a limited number of bursaries to assist students in the DVM program. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Canadian Parrot Symposium's Prize in Avian Studies

The Canadian Parrot Symposium has endowed this annual award. Apply to the OVC Awards Committee.

Qualifications: Veterinarians or graduate students enrolled in a department at the Ontario Veterinary College or undergraduates in the DVM program who are pursuing studies dealing with companion birds and have an interest in avian welfare and the human/companion bird relationship. Selected on the basis of academic achievement and dedication to the discipline.

Friends, family and fellow dog fanciers have established a scholarship in memory of Dorothea Daniell-Jenkins, a respected judge and Terrier breeder.

Dr. Roy S. Moore Memorial Award

Family, friends, professional colleagues and associates who care for laboratory animals have donated an award in memory of Dr. Roy S. Moore (OVC '54), a veterinarian who dedicated his career to the promotion of humane laboratory animal care. Nominations and curriculum vitae of nominees must be sent to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, OVC, by October 15.

Qualifications: The Recipient will be selected from undergraduate students nominated by the supervisors of all animal care facilities under the purview of the University's Animal Care Committee. The criteria for nomination and awarding the prize are outstanding aptitude for, interest in, and humane care of, research and teaching animals while working in the facility for the past academic year.

OVC Alumni Association Travel Fellowship

The fellowship supports programs at institutions outside Canada between semester 6 and 7. Application must be made to the OVC Awards Committee by the end of semester 5. The application must include a letter of reference from at least one instructor, a letter of intent, a resumé and a letter indicating that satisfactory arrangements for the program have been made. The recipient must have high academic standing, leadership, and good communication skills.

Ottawa-Carleton 1983 International Ploughing Match Scholarship

Apply to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, OVC, by April 1.

Qualifications: Student from the Ottawa-Carleton region who has completed semester 2 of the DVM program and who has a cumulative average of 70% (minimum) standing in semesters 1 and 2. Participation in extracurricular activities and financial need will be considered.

Pfizer Animal Health Company Prizes

Pfizer Company of Canada presents two prizes to students in the DVM program.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 8 of the DVM program. The first prize is based on proficiency in large animal medicine and the second is based on proficiency in small animal medicine.

Qualifications: One student who has completed semester 4 and one student who has completed semester 6 of the DVM program. Both recipients will be elected by their classmates on the basis of scholarship and leadership.

James and Marjorie Pinkney Studentship Research Award

This award was established by Dr. R. James Pinkney, a distinguished alumnus of OVC '37. Dr. Pinkney was a veterinary practitioner in Cooksville for over forty years and received numerous awards for sportsmanship in agricultural competition and leadership in agriculture. The award will enable an OVC undergraduate student in years 1, 2, or 3 to pursue, during the summer months, a research project related to the health and welfare of animals. Students taking part in the year 3 externship program may receive a portion of the award for the non-externship portion of the summer. Applications must be submitted by the candidates and their supervising faculty members to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, OVC, by March 15.

Quinte Animal Welfare Bursary

This bursary has been established by Quinte Animal Welfare Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting the protection of animals against unnecessary suffering or cruelty. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Students in the DVM program who have a record of satisfactory academic performance and have a demonstrated need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to residents of Lennox and Addington, Prince Edward, Hastings or Northumberland Counties.

Dr. C.K. "Chuck" Roe Memorial Scholarship

The Class of OVC '60, together with family, friends and colleagues of Dr. "Chuck" Roe (OVC '50), a respected faculty member of the Ontario Veterinary College and exemplary humanitarian have endowed this memorial scholarship.

Qualifications: Undergraduate student who has completed semester 6 of the DVM program with the highest grade in course 93-414 Health Management for Swine. The recipient's participation in college and other extracurricular activities will also be considered.

Royal Canadian Army Veterinary Corps Prize

Applicants must submit a plan for the work/study visit and a letter from the host by April 1. Selection will be based on the merit of the proposal and academic performance.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 4 of the veterinary program and is planning a work/study visit to an equine facility during the summer between 2nd and 3rd year. The care and welfare of horses should be a significant component of the proposal.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 4 of the DVM program, and who rank first and second in the small animal portions of Clinical Medicine courses: 93-385 Introduction to Medicine and 93-386 Clinical Medicine I.

Amount: One scholarships of $600 and one of $400

Saunders Prizes

Provided by the W.B. Saunders Company Canada Limited.

Qualifications: Students who are most proficient in medical and surgical exercises, small and large animals respectively.
Semester: 6
Amount: A one year subscription to Veterinary Clinics: Large or Small Animal Practice or Equine Practice.

F.W. Schofield Prize

This prize is presented from a fund established by Dr. F.W. Schofield with contributions from the Canadian Association of Veterinary Pathologists and the late Dr. H.T. Batt.

Qualifications: Student completing semester 8 of the DVM program with the highest ranking in Pathology.

Norman W. Simmons Memorial Award
Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 6 of the DVM program with the highest grade in course 93-407 Diseases of Non-Domestic Animals.

Amount: $150

Andrew Smith Memorial Medal

A medal in memory of the late Andrew Smith, founder of the Ontario Veterinary College, is the highest award given to a member of the graduating class.

Qualifications: The qualifications which are considered, in order of importance, are scholastic ability and clinical proficiency. The student's entire college career will be considered.

W.G. Stevenson Memorial Scholarship

Presented as a memorial to Dr. W. Gordon Stevenson, OVC '37.

Qualifications: Student completing semester 8 of the DVM program who is most proficient in bovine reproduction and obstetrics.

Lesley Lewisohn Stewart Bursary

Dr. Samuel Downing Stirk Memorial Award
Qualifications: Presented to the student who has completed semester 8 to have the best diagnostic ability in the diseases of large animals.

Luke Thomson Memorial Award for Outstanding Commitment to Human-Companion Animal Bond

Donated by Dr. Catherine Thomson-McGhie (OVC '91), in memory of her beloved German Shepherd dog Luke. Article submission to the OVC Awards Committee by January 1.

Qualifications: Students enrolled in the DVM program who have submitted an article suitable for publication dealing with the Human-Companion Animal Bond and its relevance in Veterinary Practice. The recipient will be selected on the basis of the assessment of the article completed according to CVJ format for Brief Communications.

Amount: Annual award of $500

Toronto Humane Society Scholarships
Qualifications: Students who have successfully completed semester 8 of the DVM program. The recipients, a man and a woman, will be selected on the basis of academic performance and demonstrated care and concern for the welfare and well-being of animals.
Semester: 8
Amount: Two scholarships of $250.

Maude Loretta Trapp Memorial Bursaries

Maude Loretta Trapp, a humanitarian and lover of animals has endowed bursaries for undergraduate veterinary students who are residents of North Western Ontario. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Undergraduate veterinary students who are residents of North Western Ontario (whole district of Thunder Bay and all the territory west up to the Manitoba border). Applicants will have acceptable academic performance and demonstrated financial need.

This award is presented by OVC '78 in memory of their classmate, Robert Walker.
