Studio Art

School of Fine Art and Music

Admission to all Studio Art courses is based on the university's policy with regard to Priority Access Courses. Admission to ALL Studio Courses at the 3000-level and above is restricted to students who:

  1. are currently registered in the Art History or Studio Art Specializations of the Bachelor of Arts Program;

  2. have an average of 70% in all ARTH and SART course attempts;

  3. have completed (ARTH*1220 or ARTH*2200), (ARTH*1510 or ARTH*1520), SART*1050 and SART*1060.

Studio supplies: The majority of the cost of supplies must be borne by the student. In order to permit the University to subsidize this cost and to allow for savings through discount buying, some materials are obtained through the School of Fine Art and Music by payment of a lab fee. The amount of the fee is established for each semester prior to registration.

Note: Due to limited faculty resources and facilities, enrolment in these courses may be restricted to Studio Art majors or minors.

SART*1050 Foundation Studio F,W (2-4) [0.50]
This course provides a foundation in the technical and theoretical aspects of contemporary two-dimensional media. Through a combination of lectures, studio projects, readings and a field trip the students will explore perceptual, conceptual and topical dimensions of art making practices.
Restriction(s): Registration in semesters one, two, three or four. May not register in SART*1060 in the same term. This is a Priority Access Course. This course provides a foundation in the technical and theoretical aspects of contemporary three-dimensional and time-based media. Through a combination of lectures, studio projects and guest speakers, students will explore perceptual, conceptual and topical dimensions of contemporary art making practices.

This course, which uses a web-based platform, is an introduction to contemporary art and artists. Lectures will be augmented by studio art assignments and online discussions in order to develop an understanding of material covered in the course.

This course will consider the activity of drawing as an ability to work with a varied range of applications – all of them concerned with the investigation and development of idea through making an image. This course is an introduction to the basic concepts, techniques and media of drawing, through disciplined observational and imaginative study.

SART*2200 Painting I F,W (0-6) [0.50]
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of observational painting in oil and acrylic paint. In addition to developing skill in colour-mixing, composition, and using value to create space and form, students will learn proper care for tools and how to prepare supports. Regular discussions of contemporary and relevant historical examples will assist students to understand their work as part of the broader conversation and discourse in painting. Prior or concurrent Drawing classes are recommended.

SART*2300 Sculpture I F,W (0-6) [0.50]
This course is an introduction to contemporary sculptural concerns through hands-on projects and historical readings. Students will be actively engaged in exploring a variety of materials and ideas including modular construction, scale and soft sculpture.

SART*2460 Introductory Printmaking I F (0-6) [0.50]
This course is an introduction to the traditional printmaking media of intaglio and relief printing. This course will focus on various methods of creating an etching, applying hard ground for drawing with a needle point, using acid to etch the lines, and open bite areas. Further work will involve use of aquatint, soft ground, Chine-collé and printing the etching plate. Students will also learn woodblock printing, including printing in a single colour and then reworking the block to create a colour reduction print. Both types of printmaking are treated in a traditional manner to acquire the necessary skills to print editions.

SART*2470 Introductory Printmaking II W (0-6) [0.50]
This course is an introduction to the techniques of the traditional printmaking media of lithography and silkscreen. The course will focus upon the technique of drawing in grease into limestone blocks. Students will be able to prepare and work an image into the stone, etch with acid and gum, and then print a viable edition on handmade paper. Students are introduced to the technique of silkscreen using cut stencils, hand drawn positive and photomechanical production skills. Students will be able to print both types of print media at the end of the course.

This course is an introduction to the historic, conceptual, and material nature of photography in contemporary art. Course content will include basic digital, analogue and studio techniques, and an exploration of historic techniques such as the Photogram and Camera Obscura. Readings, discussions, and assignments will forge connections between historic and contemporary modes of image making, and will encourage students to experiment with innovative ways of utilizing the photographic medium.

SART*2700 Introduction to Computer Graphics F (0-6) [0.50]
This course provides an in-depth introduction to the image making possibilities of digital art in the field of computer graphics. Students will learn various methods of working with scanned and imported photographic material. Through a number of directed projects students will acquire a working knowledge of Photoshop. Various projects will introduce aspects of layout and graphic design as well as how to manage large composite imaginary images. The course will also focus on preparing ideas and images for a personal art website. Some computer experience is recommended.

SART*2710 Drawing Graphics on the Computer W (0-6) [0.50]
This course introduces digital drawing on the computer, specifically, translating traditional media into complex vector graphics. Through a number of directed projects students will acquire a working knowledge of object/vector graphics. Graphic design topics will be introduced as well as signage and logos. A large perspective drawing will be completed. Design layouts and text work will be emphasized as well as some 3D projects. Some computer experience is recommended.

This course introduces students to a variety of different processes common to the contemporary studio artist, with an emphasis on time-based and interdisciplinary forms of production. Students will be actively engaged in exploring a variety of skills, material processes and concepts, including basic techniques in video, audio and forms of production such as the, artist multiple, site-specifically and other strategies of cenceptual art. An understanding of the technical and theoretical concerns found in contemporary art will provide a solid base for upper level courses, where students will develop a stronger capacity to uncover and experiment with media or forms that are more appropriate for their ideas in both thematic and independently oriented projects

This course attempts to foster understanding of the basis and technical issues necessary to the making of drawings while introducing the philosophical and critical issues related to the discipline. This course will consider drawing as an activity with a wide range of applications.

In this course, technical, aesthetic and philosophical issues central to contemporary painting will be investigated. These include diverse approaches to representational painting today as well as an introduction to abstraction and other non-representational strategies. Activities such as class discussions, field trips and presentations on contemporary artists will assist students to situate their own developing practices within the field.

This is a technical course in which specific tools of the wood and metal shops will be studied in depth through assignments. Conceptual issues will be examined in relation to the creation of objects.

SART*3410 Intaglio F (0-6) [0.50]
This is an in-depth investigation into aspects of intaglio printmaking. Traditional skills will be extended into working with computer images and exposing photo-generated images onto Photopolymer plates. Personal image making will be developed using multiple plates and printing in colour.

SART*3450 Lithography F (0-6) [0.50]
This is an in-depth exploration of the art of lithography in which students will learn both traditional and contemporary approaches; from working on limestone blocks to preparing and printing photo-litho plates. The course may include using computer graphics to develop images suitable for four-colour separations in photo-litho. Exposing and printing four colour (CMYK) films onto photo litho plates is similar to commercial photo lithography. The student will learn to print multiple plates in registration to create fine art lithography.

SART*3470 Photo-Printmaking W (0-6) [0.50]
This course will investigate a variety of photo and digital processes as resources for image making in conjunction with silk-screen and photographic stencils, plate lithography and photo-polymer etching techniques. Students will be introduced to Photoshop© for preparing film work, including combinations of drawing, scanning, image composition, image manipulation, and digital output options.

This course introduces students to key approaches behind the design, development, and delivery of a modern website. Areas of focus may include: composition, HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) code, and website integration with social media. Students will work towards creating a final website project, focusing on their personal portfolio, to be made available online for public engagement.

This course combines non-silver and digital photographic methods as the basis for an aesthetic investigation into the formal, conceptual, technical and theoretical issues related to historic and new technologies in photographic practice. Course content will include non-silver printing such as Platinum/Palladium, large format photography, and an exploration of scale in digital photographic production. In-class discussions, readings and seminars are designed to provide students with a critical and historical understanding of the art-making process.

This course encourages visual problem solving and analytical skills within an experimental and exploratory studio arts practice. Course material is presented through lectures, labs, and critiques to engage with the form, content and technical attributes of the medium. Scale, electronic flash lighting, medium format photography, and darkroom printing will be covered. In-class discussions, readings and seminars are designed to provide students with a critical and historical understanding of the art-making process.

This course examines a number of different contemporary art forms. Students will explore and consider ideas surrounding the found object, the use of language and text in art, the theory of the dérive and appropriation. Students will continue developing their technical skills in video and sound production and are encouraged to explore such forms as collage, assemblage, the artist book and/or multiple, performance, relational art, and other avant-garde and contemporary art strategies. Critical readings will introduce students to the issues around these alternative forms of production. Class discussions will provide an opportunity for the student to engage and develop an understanding of related theoretical terms and concepts.

This course focuses on experimentation as a means to investigate the possibilities available to a contemporary painter. Representational and non-representational approaches will continue to be explored, with emphasis on the development of the student’s own research interests. This capstone course offers advanced investigations into the theory and practice of painting, with strong emphasis on the development of a critically informed and engaged individual painting practice. Studio work is supplemented with critical readings and a gallery field trip. Students collaborate to mount an exhibition of their work at the end of the semester.

This course focuses on a professional level of printmaking with a particular focus upon the design and printing of a series of multi-coloured prints. During the course at least three of the printmaking media will be attempted. Preliminary ideas and preparations for the complex designs will be created using computer graphics. The course also includes student presentations and a brief research paper on a recognized printmaker.

This course offers some directed projects, but also provides students with the opportunity to generate, sustain, and complete a self-directed body of work. Students will explore various approaches to historical and contemporary modes of photography, with an emphasis on experimental, hybrid, and material-based approaches to the medium. An emphasis will be placed on conceptual development, exploring the interaction of formal and representational concerns within the practice of photography.

This course will emphasize research, problem solving, technical experimentation, and material and aesthetic project development. Student can choose to work with black and white, colour, non-silver, digital or hybrid photographic techniques in order to produce a body of work for exhibition. Opportunities for interdisciplinary approaches to photographic practice and independent and sustained research methodologies will be encouraged. The course will also cover professional skills, such as how to write an artist statement, how to apply for funding, and how to organize, curate and install a group exhibition.

This is an advanced and specialized course in individual studio work, which affords students opportunities for interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches and oversees the development of independent study strategies. Students will research and complete a major self-directed project. This course is not intended for all Honours students. This course is intended to assist in the preparation for graduate school and professional activities in the Arts.

This course will give students an opportunity to identify and focus on a particular issue or issues found within the broad scope of different approaches to contemporary art. Thematic projects may include an examination that repositions the artist as curator, collector, documentarian, researcher, activist, historian, etc. Students will be encouraged to consider various forms or a combination of different disciplines that reflect the diversity by which artists view their own production in relation to other forms of production in society. One self-directed project based on the students’ own research and in close consultation with the instruction will give the student a solid grounding on how to pursue more focused independent projects.

In this course, students produce two self-directed projects centered on their own research, in close consultation with the instructor. Students will engage in professional activities common to the practicing artist such that support their production such as presentations, writing proposals for grants and composing an artist statement. In this course students will begin to focus more closely on finding ways to theorize their production. Articulating their concerns and area of research through writing and speech to different audiences can provide an effective way to deepen the experience of the work.

SART*4890 Interactive Multimedia W (0-6) [1.00]
This course examines the intellectual and creative ethic of the Internet and considers the realities of establishing an art practice in a culture of instant gratification and overwhelming interruptions. Informed by course readings and self-directed research, students create multimedia projects that engage the Internet as a distinct creative medium and analyze the power and peril of constant connection. Students participate in and create social media projects, app development, the Internet of Things (IoT) and experiment with attention restorative theories.
