Description

The Subatomic Physics Research Tools and Instruments (SAP-RTI) grants foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and training capability of researchers in the field of subatomic physics by supporting the purchase of research equipment and installations.  SAP-RTI grants are awards that assist buying or developing research equipment that costs more than $7,000.

SAP-RTI grants are divided into three categories, according to the total net cost of the equipment, i.e., excluding taxes, shipping and handling. These categories are:

Category 1: $7,001 to $150,000;

Category 2: $150,001 to $325,000; and

Category 3: more than $325,000

Applications to SAP-RTI Program are not subject to a quota.

Eligibility

Please refer to NSERC’s overall eligibility criteria [4] for more information. Applicants that have submitted an NOI on or before August 1, 2016, 8:00 pm (Categories 2 & 3 only) are eligible to apply. There is no NOI required for Category 1 applications.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a minimum three-year appointment (fulltime, contract or adjunct) in an academic position with a firm offer in writing at the time of application.
  • Hold or have applied for (submitted) a Discovery, Strategic (Networks and projects), CRD, or NSERC-funded Canada Research Chair funding.

Maximum Project Value

See Category 1, 2, 3 above. If requested, NSERC will pay all of the applicable taxes, as well as all the shipping and handling expenses.

Indirect Costs

Project Duration

One to three years; Category 1 are one-year awards. In exceptional cases, multi-year requests will be accepted. Categories 2 and 3 are typically three years, but if exceptions are made to the duration, NSERC asks applicants to contact them.

Special Notes

Notification of Intent to Apply (Categories 2 & 3 only): Applicants submit NOIs directly to NSERC via the Research Portal, by August 1, 2016, 8:00 pm. The NOI is a mandatory step in the application process. No OR-5 form or submission to Office of Research Services is required at the NOI stage. CCV is required for Categories 2 &3 for applicants and co-applicants at the NOI stage. There is no NOI stage for Category 1.

Full Application (Categories 1, 2 &3): Sign in to the Research Portal [1] to prepare an application which must be linked to a completed NSERC Canadian Common CV [5] (CCV) for each applicant and each co-applicant. In the case of SAP-RTI – Category 2 or Category 3 applications, the CCV can be updated between the time it is submitted with the NOI and the application deadline. CCV is required for all Categories (1, 2 &3) for applicants and co-applicants at the full application stage.

Letters of Support

A support letter from the applicant’s head of department must accompany every SAP-RTI – Category 2 or 3. Applicants for SAP-RTI Category 3 grants must include a letter of support from the Associate Vice-President (Research Services [6]), John Livernois.   Researchers should work with their Associate Deans of Research to prepare and submit a draft of this letter to acclarke@uoguelph.ca [7] ahead of the internal deadline so that it may be coordinated prior to submission. See NSERC Guidelines [2] for requirements to be included in the letters.

Internal Deadline

to Office of Research Services:

Full Application - Categories 2 & 3: September 26, 2016 4:30 pm

Full Application - Category 1: October 18, 2016 4:30 pm

Applicant submits a signed OR-5 to Research.Services@uoguelph.ca [8]. Applicant clicks “Submit” in the Research Portal so application is received by the Office of Research Services in the Research Portal.

External Deadline
