Position Title / Rank: Assistant/Associate Librarian, 1 yr CL, Metadata Librarian

Position Description:

The University of Guelph’s McLaughlin Library invites applications for a Metadata Librarian, one (1) year contractually limited appointment with the possibility of renewal. Working collaboratively in a team-based environment and reporting to the Manager of Electronic Resources, Information Resources, the Metadata Librarian participates in developing, implementing and evaluating metadata strategies, policies and procedures. The Librarian plays a critical role in contributing to the library's overall discovery & metadata strategies through resource discovery and metadata management and coordination of projects to support emerging library needs. The Metadata Librarian supports the overall works and goals of the Information Resources Team by contributing to strategic objectives, representing the library's interests with consortia and vendor partners, taking on a project leadership role and/or participation on committees.

Major Responsibilities:

• Metadata management
• Participates in developing, implementing and evaluating metadata strategies, policies and procedures
• Coordinates metadata management and supports bibliographic control for all resource types
• Evaluates new and emerging strategies and technologies to enhance the efficiency and quality of metadata procedures
• Membership on library committees or working groups, as appropriate
• Participates in professional organizations regarding issues in metadata services, and the development of resource discovery tools and services, as appropriate

Qualifications:

Required:
• An ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science
• Thorough understanding of resource description strategies in a webscale discovery environment
• Knowledge of current cataloguing rules, standards, and controlled vocabularies, including RDA, LC Classification, and LCSH;
• Working knowledge and experience with MARC 21
• Experience with at least one non-MARC metadata format, standard or schema such as Dublin Core, JATS, BITS, DDI, METS, MODS, PREMIS or TEI
• Demonstrated proficiency with metadata editing software applications and metadata management systems
• A high degree of computer literacy, a demonstrated ability to analyze and solve technical challenges
• Awareness of current issues and trends in electronic resource management, metadata management, and technology as it relates to metadata management
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Excel
• Ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage time well, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with colleagues

Preferred:
• Relevant experience in metadata and/or cataloguing and electronic resource management, preferably in an academic library environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of XML and XML DTD/schema
• Experience using Marcos and/or Marc Edit software

This is a one-year contractually limited appointment with the possibility of renewal.
