Position Description:

The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Population Medicine. The department is an international leader in veterinary epidemiology and preventive medicine, promoting health, welfare, and productivity in animal populations, and promoting public health through studies of zoonoses, food safety, and health policy and promotion concerning infectious and non-infectious human diseases.

Our department strengths are epidemiology, health management of food animals, public health, animal behaviour and welfare, and clinical communications in veterinary medicine. Our faculty and graduate students learn and apply quantitative and qualitative methods in exploring animal and public health and well-being issues. Our department has a substantial role in teaching DVM and BSc students and in graduate education for MSc and doctoral programs in epidemiology and public health. The OVC is staking a leadership position in One Health scholarship. Part of the mission of the Chair will be to identify and build ways in which the department can achieve excellence and contribute to identifiable areas of strength in support of One Health-related initiatives.

The Chair is responsible for the effective, efficient, and collegial operation of the Department. The ideal candidate should be a dynamic, collaborative leader with strong communications skills and a vision that will set the stage for innovative research, learning and teaching within the department. Candidates should have a strong research background. The successful candidate will have the ability to build effective relationships within the University of Guelph and with external groups. The appointment will be for a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal for another five years.

Applicants must possess a PhD (or equivalent) and be able to demonstrate significant teaching and research experience related to the department’s programs and activities. A doctor of veterinary medicine (or equivalent degree) is preferred. The selected candidate will be a successful educator and researcher. Demonstrated experience in human and financial resource management and the ability to engage faculty, staff, and students in developing and implementing new initiatives is required.

The appointment will be tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
