The School of Computer Science, University of Guelph, is seeking applications for a two-year contractually-limited assistant professor position in cybersecurity. The successful candidate will assist with the development and launch of a new MSc in cybersecurity. The position will disappear after two years and be replaced by a tenure-track assistant professor position (assuming the new MSc program is approved). The ideal start date is May 1, 2018. Later start dates may be considered.
Current MSc and PhD programs
The School is currently comprised of 23 faculty, 900 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. The MSc in Computer Science emphasizes both academic and applied research, while the PhD in Computational Sciences produces interdisciplinary scholars who are capable of tackling emerging problems in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, etc.
New MSc in cybersecurity
A significant focus of this faculty position is to assist with the design, development and deployment of a new course-based MSc in Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, which the School is planning to launch in the fall of 2019. The new Masters will be unique with a core focus on threat intelligence, SIEM, intrusion prevention, malware analysis, computer forensics, and its attention to detail in the area of lab-supported learning. It will cover the most challenging and technical aspects of the cybersecurity field and deliver graduates with unique skill sets that are in high demand. The School has developed a preliminary proposal and has secured strategic partners, including Cisco Systems, IBM and McAfee. These partners are committed to participating in the Advisory Board, helping develop the curriculum, providing teaching and lab support, contributing professional services and security software products, etc. (about $1.8M in-kind contributions expected so far). The building hosting the School is currently being completely renovated (a $9M project) and will include in the fall of 2019 a brand new physical lab that will serve as an academic version of a SOC.
Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent at the time of appointment, in computer science or related field. They must have strong expertise in cybersecurity, and an understanding of industry needs with respect to cybersecurity. An established record of research is required, and must include recent research-based publications in top-tier venues. Candidates with a relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience, and current or past recipients of an NSERC or other government-funded research grant, postdoctoral fellowship, or doctoral scholarship will be favourably considered. Demonstrated experience supervising students or staff on research-oriented projects is also an asset.
Candidates must show promise of being exceptional teachers. Previous teaching experience, e.g., as a Sessional Lecturer, with a record of high-quality teaching based on formal teaching evaluations or teaching awards is an asset. The successful candidate will develop two courses for the new Masters in their first year and will teach them in their second year.
