Position Description:
The University of Guelph invites applications, nominations and expressions of interest for the Barrett Family Foundation Chair in Sustainable Food Engineering with the appointment to be effective ideally by September 2018, or as soon thereafter as possible. The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Food Engineering or other related discipline and a proven track record scholar, at a level commensurate with appointment at an Associate Professor/Professor rank to the School of Engineering within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
As a critical step in developing long-term solutions to ensure a greener, sustainable food industry, the Barrett Family Foundation Chair in Sustainable Food Engineering will develop, implement and lead an engagement and outreach initiative in this area. The ideal candidate should be an internationally renowned expert in food engineering, and be instrumental in the development of a sustainable food engineering research program at the University of Guelph. The Barrett Chair will lead the development of Canada’s first national roundtable on sustainable food engineering technology, create an industry research advisory group, and increase national and international awareness of sustainable food engineering issues through communication and outreach informed by research. Supported by Barrett Family Foundation, the Chair will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education and strengthen the University’s capacity to respond to food industry issues related to sustainable food engineering and technology.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar and interdisciplinary thinker in a field relevant to sustainable food engineering. While a strong record of research accomplishments and demonstrated abilities in teaching and graduate advising are important, the objective of the Chair is to expand and enhance the University’s communication and outreach activities in a manner that strengthens our reputation as Canada’s Food University. The skills to build connections with other institutions, consumers and companies within the agricultural and food industry value chains are essential.
The University of Guelph has well-established and accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. At present, the School of Engineering is comprised of 58 faculty members, 35 staff and technicians, 1800 undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students. Its leadership is bolstered by the University’s unique research and development partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
