The Opportunity:

The University of Guelph Library invites applications for a Research & Scholarship (R&S) Librarian. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of a one-year renewal.

The Team:

As part of the Research & Scholarship team, the incumbent actively contributes toward the fulfillment of the mandate to:

  • engage the research community – developing an understanding of the research enterprise on campus and identifying researchers’ needs for support and collaboration in the research process and scholarly communications;
  • contribute to the research process – in response to researchers’ needs and the changing nature of scholarly communication, through the development of services, direct participation in research and through the provision of expertise;
  • working with the Collections & Content team, continue development of a scholarly communication program that raises awareness of, enables, and advocates for, a transformation in scholarly communication
  • collaboratively identify, deploy &/or develop and implement, sustainable services and infrastructure in support of digital scholarship projects on campus (in conjunction with the Library’s other strategic teams)

Position Description:

Working collaboratively in a team-based environment and reporting to the Head, Research & Scholarship (R&S), the Research and Scholarship Librarian supports, enables, and contributes to the research process on campus through the development of library services, and the provision of expertise in research impact, scholarly publishing, and the research lifecycle. The Head of R&S will ensure that resources are available for the incumbent to develop, promote, and support these initiatives. The Research and Scholarship Librarian will provide advanced support to researchers with a focus on the College of Biological Sciences, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Ontario Agricultural College, and Ontario Veterinary College. This will include both appointment-based consultations and classroom instruction. The librarian will also be responsible for supporting research synthesis reviews.

The R&S team is addressing the systematic issues in scholarly communication. In doing so, we are challenging legacy processes, and all team members are supported in exploring new services, approaches, and initiatives to meet that need. We also understand that not all new ideas succeed, and the successful applicant will be comfortable with occasional failure as the price of success in an experimental team.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a professional librarian in a research-intensive environment
  • Experience working with researchers on publishing and open access issues
  • Experience designing and delivering instruction in a post-secondary academic environment
  • Demonstrated creative thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated engagement with/interest in the changing scholarly communication system
  • Ability to take initiative, set goals, and manage time
  • Strong desire to help researchers share their work with the world

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using databases and resources in the human and animal health sciences
  • Knowledge of, and experience conducting systematic, scoping, and other research synthesis reviews
