The Opportunity:

The University of Guelph, McLaughlin Library invites applications for an Electronic Resources & Metadata (ERM) Librarian.

The Team:

The ERM team is part of the larger Collections and Content (C&C) strategic team, which builds and manages collections that are central to teaching and research, are easily discoverable, and available in a timely manner. Current electronic resource management and metadata systems include: SFX, Primo, Primo Central and Voyager, MarcEdit, LibGuides, OCLC Collection Manager, EZ Proxy, problem resolution tracking software. In the near future, the team will be involved in deploying a new Library Services Platform as part of OCUL Collaborative Futures.

The ERM team is currently comprised of a Manager, ERM, and 3 ERM Library Associates, in addition to the position listed here.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Manager, ERM, and working collaboratively on the ERM team, which is part of the Collections & Content strategic team, the ERM Librarian:

The R&S team is addressing the systematic issues in scholarly communication. In doing so, we are challenging legacy processes, and all team members are supported in exploring new services, approaches, and initiatives to meet that need. We also understand that not all new ideas succeed, and the successful applicant will be comfortable with occasional failure as the price of success in an experimental team.

  • Implements effective e-resource and metadata strategies and processes to provide access and maximize discovery of the library’s resources.
  • Provides technical support and expertise in the management of electronic resources across multiple systems (such as the ILS, Library Services Platform, link resolver, knowledge bases, vendor platforms, and discovery systems).
  • Provides leadership and support in cataloguing and metadata activities to the ERM team and the C&C team. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of metadata strategies, policies and procedures.
  • Provides support, training and expertise to the ERM team.
  • Engages in and supports evidence-informed decision making and strategic discussions of the C&C steering team
  • Provides feedback and technical expertise for the C&C strategic team regarding the quality of third-party metadata, challenges with vendor platforms, issues around off-campus access, provision of usage statistics, and overall technical performance of e resources.
  • Works with colleagues responsible for collection development and management, acquisitions, e-learning/reserves, discovery, and user experience in order to maximize user access and discovery of collections.
  • Collaborates and consults with colleagues on the C&C team, other Library teams and consortia to effectively manage the lifecycle of e-resources.
  • Engages in effective communication and outreach with library staff, users, and vendors to resolve and troubleshoot access and discovery issues and improve the user’s experience.
  • Maintains current awareness of best practices and emerging technologies and services in electronic resources management and metadata initiatives among research libraries and the scholarly communication ecosystem within the disciplines.

Required Qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited Masters’ degree in library or information science
  • Minimum one year of experience in metadata and/or cataloguing, and electronic resources management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with e-resources management using multiple systems (such as the ILS, link resolver, knowledge bases, and discovery systems)
  • Knowledge of current cataloguing rules, standards, and controlled vocabularies, including RDA, MARC, LC Classification, and LCSH
  • Demonstrated proficiency with metadata editing software applications and metadata management systems
  • Awareness of current issues and trends in electronic resource management, metadata management, and technology as it relates to metadata management
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • A commitment to working in a collaborative team environment
  • Intellectual curiosity/initiative and a commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities and a demonstrated ability to analyze and solve technical challenges
  • Demonstrated project management experience and the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage time well, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an academic library environment
