An opinion piece written by U of G food, agricultural and resource economics professors Alfons Weersink and Brady Deaton appears Wednesday in the Toronto Star.

The article discusses the recent increase in commodity prices and argues for more investment in agricultural research and rural infrastructure as the solution.

Weersink's research is focused on evaluating the consequences of bio-product development on farmers and assessing the effectiveness of environmental policies within the agricultural sector. He has received extensive media coverage over the past couple of months commenting as an expert on the current global food crisis.

Deaton’s research focuses on land and property as well as food and agricultural standards. He currently directs the Greenbelt Project whose mission is to support the independent study of the economic effects of Ontario’s recently enacted Greenbelt.
