Dr. Robert Corry has been named the recipient of the 2011 Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture's award for Excellence in Research.  The award recognizes Corry's continuing contributions to scholarship in landscape architecture.  The award was presented at the CELA meeting in Los Angeles.

 

 

 

 

March 2011Maurice Nelischer OALA

Congratulations to Maurice Nelischer who received the 2010 OALA Public Practice Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects. Maurice was recognized for his outstanding leadership as a member of the profession in public practice who promotes and enhances landscape architecture by working for improved understanding and appreciation of the work of landscape architects in both public and private practice.

 

 

March 2011Taylor book
The second edition of Professor Emeritus James Taylor's book "The Practice of Landscape Architecture in Canada" is now available. The book has been used as a reference by offices and students in Canada. It is used as a text book for professional practice courses in landscape architecture at Canadian colleges and universities. The book covers the history, practice, regulation, ethics, and law of Canadian practice and includes information on design management, focusing on office organization, marketing, fees, contacts, and contact adminstration and the future of the profession. This book is published by the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation (for order forms contact jrtaylor@uoguelph.ca).

 

February 2011Karen Landman
Dr. Karen Landman gave an ASTRA series seminar titled, Urban Agriculture - what's happening across North America? The seminar focused on greenhouse gas emissions reductions, increases in local economic activity, enhancing social relationships, and recycling wastes as benefits of urban agriculture. Dr. Landman recently undertook a 30,000km road tour to investigate the urban agriculture movement in North America.

 

 

 

February 2011Design with Microclimate
Professor Robert Brown's newest book, Design with Microclimate (Island Press) is available online and in book stores. Brown has crafted elegant and direct guidance for achieving improved thermal comfort in outdoor spaces in this 179-page illustrated book. It is described as "brilliant" and "the most important, easily readable text discussing microclimate" by Cornelia Hahn Oberlander."

                                                                                         

 

 

 

 

 

 

January 2011Design Guidelines for Sustainable Rural Communities
Assistant Professor Sean Kelly co-authored 'Design Guidelines for Sustainable Rural Communities' - an important resource for understanding how local governments and developers can safeguard the rural environment, from regional to site level. The book provides a glimpse of many tools including success stories and examples of sustainability initiatives that are in use in rural Canada. It is available from Greenlands Centre Wellington (greenlandscw.org)."


 

December 2010Ground Magazine
Ground Magazine (from the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects) profiles research conducted by Dr. Robert Corry, Dr. Robert Brown, and collaborators to remediate gravel, sand, and rock extraction sites in Ontario. Their work included ecological, microclimatic, and social/cultural assessments of how alternative rehabilitation approaches can enhance outcomes."

Nicaragua Trip - Summer 2010 LA and ID Students

 

The Ontario Agricultural College Teaching Trust has awarded Dr. Robert Brown and Dr. Robert Corry funding to enhance undergraduate education. Brown and Corry proposed to apply funding to measure and monitor microclimates and wildlife using cutting-edge equipment including terrestrial radiation sensors, digital anemometers, and motion-activated photography. The OAC TT award is expected to benefit the BLA student body of 200 students by enhancing their understanding and visualization of landscape attributes.
