Preparing for the S20 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Please follow the steps below to prepare for the S20 Undergraduate Research Showcase the week of August 24-28, 2020.

Step-by-Step Showcase Preparation Instructions

  1. Complete the S20 Undergraduate Research Showcase availability poll [1] by August 17, 2020.
    • Please indicate all times you are available with a minimum three of 3 selections.
    • You will be scheduled for 2 slots: one for your Executive Summary presentation and one to be an audience member for another presentation group.
  2. Watch for an e-mail August 18, 2020 about your scheduled presentation and audience slot. 
  3. Upload your pre-recorded 3-5 min Poster Presentation to the S20 Undergraduate Research Showcase Presentations Folder [2] by 11:59 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2020.
    • Resources for developing your content and presentation are below.
    • Recordings will be posted to the Showcase website August 24-28, 2020.
    • If you are using this as an assessment opportunity for UNIV*2800, 3800 or 4800 [3] or another course, please connect with your faculty supervisor about specific expectations.
  4. Prepare your 1-2 min Executive Summary presentation.
    • This should be a high-level overview of your findings and their implications. You can assume your audience has seen your recorded video. This presentation is meant as a reminder for those attending the live event.
    • Your Executive Summary will be delivered live on Microsoft Teams during your scheduled presentation slot.
    • You should prepare a single static PowerPoint slide, document, or image that can be displayed during your presentation.
    • Make sure to anticipate and prepare for questions.

Developing Your Poster Content and Presentation

A poster presentation should be a concise summary of your research findings and process. Your audience will most want to know what you learned, the process you used to arrive at your conclusions, and the implications of your findings for the discipline and/or society.

Create an academic poster page – U of G Library [4] 

  • This is an excellent starting point, especially if you are new to poster presentations.
  • There are tons of resources to help with planning of layout and graphics for your presentation.

  • This is an example of great presentation skills and using storytelling to make a presentation accessible and interesting. 
  • Not a traditional poster presentation as there is only one slide on the screen that features visuals related to his research focus.

Recording Your Presentation

  • Features tips on how to design a good presentation and an overview of which platforms can be used to record online presentations for both Windows and Mac (Zoom, Logitech Capture, PowerPoint).
