U of G's Centre for International Programs, Open Ed and the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (OAC) teams up to bring Guelph to the Glocal Classroom!

The Glocal Classroom project involves four universities on four continents building a global platform for collaboration and interchange in web-based learning. Each institution holds a seminar, the first was in Stellenbosch, South Africa in March 2014, Guelph, Canada hosted in May 2014, and Malmö, Sweden's seminar will be in September, 2014. The final seminar will be hosted by  Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia in November 2014.

The aim of the project is to bridge the existing gap between web-based learning (often understood as distance learning) and conventional forms of education on-campus, by exploring innovative ways to combine the two.

The third in the seminar series will be a four day conference (September 17-20, 2014) in Malmö University, Sweden. The conference will be offered in conjunction with the Ørecomm [1] Centre for Communication and Glocal Change. University of Guelph's Richard Gorrie (Open Ed) and Ataharul Chowdhury (post-doc SEDRD) will attend in person while other participants from the University of Guelph, as well as Flinders University (Australia) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa) will attend using the Glocal classroom on-line platform. Students taking the University of Guelph graduate course, "Communication for Social & Environmental Change" will be linked to the seminar via on-line streaming. The Glocal classroom project is linking students and researchers around the world to create a strong learning community without the necessity of travel. This provides more opportunities for faculty collaboration and student engagement with an emphasis on inter-cultural problem-solving.
