Global Health Leader Dr. Swaminathan Receives Honorary Degree and Advances International Collaboration
The University of Guelph proudly welcomed Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chair of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and former Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization – for a two-day visit on October 14 and 15, 2025.
Dr. Swaminathan received an honorary degree in recognition of her global leadership in public health, science and sustainable development. Her distinguished career and advocacy for inclusive, science-based policy have inspired generations of researchers and changemakers worldwide. An outstanding scientist of international repute, Dr. Swaminathan’s holistic contributions to medicine, health care, global policy, philanthropy and social welfare exemplify a One Health approach, aligning with U of G’s own goal of improving lives.
As part of the visit, Dr. Swaminathan met with faculty to discuss ongoing collaborative research projects aligned with MSSRF’s mission. While students from the One Health and International Development Studies programs had the unique opportunity to engage directly during a dynamic Q&A session hosted by Dr. Swaminathan.
A key moment of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the U of G and MSSRF, formalizing a shared commitment to collaborative research, education and innovation. This partnership paves the way for join initiatives in sustainable agriculture, One Health and global food systems - reflecting a shared vision for addressing complex global challenges through interdisciplinary and community-driven approaches.
Dr. Swaminathan’s visit sparked new ideas, strengthened international ties, and reaffirmed the University’s role as a catalyst for global change - laying the groundwork for future collaboration and impact.
U of G Hosts Second Smart Villages Symposium Focused on Climate-Smart Agriculture
The University of Guelph hosted the second annual Smart Villages Symposium on October 15, themed Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Smart Villages. Organized by the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) and sponsored by the Canada India Foundation (CIF), the event brought together 65 participants from Canada, India, and other agriculturally significant regions.
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chair, MSSRF, delivered the preliminary keynote address, inspiring attendees with a vision for inclusive, sustainable rural development. The symposium fostered interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers, students, and community leaders, and featured flash presentations from graduate students showcasing innovative approaches to climate-smart agriculture and rural resilience.
