Master of Toxicology (MTOX)

Prospective students are advised that the program is still subject to formal approval by the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance.

Toxicology is at the forefront of protecting human health, the environment, and public safety.

Our Master of Toxicology (MTOX) is a one-year, course-based master's program that integrates analytical chemistry, environmental science and biomedical toxicology. Its emphasis on hands-on training, modern analytical instrumentation and regulatory-relevant coursework equips graduates with the practical skills directly aligned with workforce demands in Canada’s environmental, health and industrial sectors. Electives provide the flexibility to refine your focus to areas that interest you, with options including organic chemistry, medical toxicology or nutrition.

This in-person program is well suited for working professionals or recent grads seeking advanced, cross-disciplinary scientific training through applied, coursework-based learning.

  Unique credentials

Our program is Canada's first course-based master's in toxicology.

  Fast completion

Full-time students can complete the program in as little as 9-12 months, allowing you to enter the workforce sooner.

  Focus on application

Focus on application of toxicology skills with hands-on learning and no research project.

Program Information

Applicants must meet the following minimum admission requirements:

  • A four-year science or engineering degree with a minimum 'B' (73%) average in the last two years of study.
  • As part of their studies, applicants must have successfully completed one full academic year of general chemistry at a first-year level (or equivalent) as well as at least one course in each of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and biochemistry.
  • Students whose first language is not English are required to submit an English Proficiency Test result with their application. If your first language is not English but you have completed prior post-secondary studies in which English was the language instruction, you may be eligible to have your English Language Proficiency requirement waived.

Equivalent work experience in a related field would be taken into consideration in cases where the listed requirements are not met in full, consistent with University-wide Alternate Admissions Criteria.

The MTOX is eligible for our guaranteed admission pathway to eligible University of Guelph students and alumni.

This pathway reserves a limited number of spots in the program for students who meet the program admission requirements.

If you are accepted:

  • The application fee will be reimbursed after you start the program
  • You do not need to include references in your application

To find out if you are eligible, apply for the CCMPS Guaranteed Admission Pathway.

  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
  • We strongly encourage International applicants to apply a minimum of 6-9 months in advance of the start of the program to allow time for application processing and to ensure study permits can be obtained in time for admission. Please see the Office of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Recommendations for International Applicants for suggested application timeline.
  • We are not able to provide a pre-assessment to confirm the admission requirements nor to evaluate admissions documents. Please review the attached document for more details about the program admissions requirements such as admission documents and FAQs.
  • Once an applicant file is complete, it moves forward for consideration with our Admissions Committees.

To accommodate working professionals, the program will offer a two-year part-time pathway. The mode of delivery does not change for part-time students. There is no designated pathway to completion as none of the courses have prerequisites—they can be taken in any order, enabling maximum flexibility for professional students. Part-time students may take one or two courses in each semester and should complete the program within 24 months.

The tuition fee for MTOX is pending.

If your declared first language in your application is not English, you will be required to submit the results of a standardized language test with your application. Please see a list of valid English proficiency tests and required minimum scores.

The proof of English proficiency requirement may only be waived if the applicant has conferred a degree in a country where English is the native language AND, in a university, where English is the language of instruction, which includes Canada, USA, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Graduate Admissions Committee approval is required.

If you are accepted, your admission would be conditional upon the original test results being sent directly to the Office of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies from the testing centre. The test may not be more than two years old from the start date of the program.
