Drama

Department of Drama

Admission to 35-262, 35-311,35-312, 35-341,35-342, 35-360, 35-361, 35-362,35-363, 35-408, 35-409, 35-421, 35-425, 35-426 and 35-465 is not guaranteed, and is by audition, submission of a portfolio and/or interview only. For times and dates of auditions and interviews, students should consult the Department of Drama. All students applying for the entry of these courses must obtain the signature of the departmental advisor or the chair, who will admit students only after consultation with the instructor. Note: The Drama Department has a particular interest in the drama and theatre of Canada. Course offerings will reflect this concentration where appropriate.

35-100 Introduction to Theatre S,F,W(3-3)

This course deals with the nature and function of drama and theatre in society, and with the role and function of different aspects of theatre in production, including playwriting, directing, acting, design and technical theatre. It concerns itself with the social and cultural role played by theatre as an art form, and with how theatre is produced and produces its effects. The course is designed to introduce students to ways of discussing, analyzing and writing about the theatrical event. It will include attendance at selected productions, usually six, and a fee will be charged for the cost of travel to them.

35-105 Script Analysis F,W(3-0)

An introduction to the reading and analysis of scripts, and the different ways in which critics, directors, actors, and designers approach them. The course will include exercises in the written analysis of a limited number of scripts.

35-150 Introduction to Film S,F(2-3)

A study of films from a variety of periods and places, this course aims to introduce the basic components of film language and to promote the understanding of film as an art form. Through the viewing and analysis of selected films key concepts such as photography, editing and movement will be explored, as will matters such as style, authorship, and genre. (Offered in Spring semester of even-numbered years.)

35-208 Introduction to Acting S,F,W(2-3)

A studio course introducing acting methods, approaches and practices, for students of drama and theatre. (Offered in Spring semester of even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 35-100.
Exclusions: 35-109.

35-222 Introduction to Technical Theatre and Design F,W(2-3)

An introduction to the methods and materials of theatrical design and production, including sets, costumes, lighting, sound, backstage operations, and stage management, for students of drama and theatre. Students will be expected to serve on some evenings and weekends in technical capacities on a production

35-230 Introduction to Theatre History, Criticism and Theory F,W(3-0)

This course will initiate the student into the academic study of theatre history, criticism and theory. It will focus on a variety of historical, critical and theoretical approaches to the analysis of drama and theatre.

Prerequisites: 35-100.

35-240 Theatre for Young Audiences S,W(2-2)

A study of the theory and practice of theatre for young audiences, including script analysis and practical performance exercises. (Offered in Spring semester of odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 35-100.

35-250 Contemporary Cinema S,W(2-3)

The course is designed to give the student knowledge and understanding of contemporary cinematic expression. (Offered in Spring semester of odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 35-150.

35-262 Special Studies in Theatre Practice F,W(2-3)

Students will perform in departmental productions; or students with prior experience may apply to serve in technical capacities on productions. Admission is by interview or audition only.

35-3021/2 Theatre History: Concepts and Methods F(3-0)/W(3-0)

A study of theatre history and historiography, focusing on the relationships between the plays written in selected historical periods and the theatrical and cultural conditions that shaped them. The course will explore various approaches and methods of historical interpretation. This is a two-semester course. When you select it you will be registered in 35-3021 in the Fall and 35-3022 in the Winter semester. A grade will not be assigned to 35-3021 until 35-3022 has been completed.

Prerequisites: 35-105, 35-230.

35-308 Acting I F,W(2-3)

A studio course applying classroom theory to acting problems.

Prerequisites: 35-105, 35-208.

35-311 Acting II F,W(2-3)

A continuation of 35-308. Students will perform in a public production. Admission is by audition only.

Prerequisites: 35-308.

35-312 Acting III F,W(2-3)

A continuation of35-311 . Students will perform in a public production. Admission is by audition only.

Prerequisites: 35-311.

35-3211/2 Concepts and Techniques of Theatrical Design F(2-3)/W(2-3)

A study of conceptual approaches to set, costume, lighting and sound design for the theatre, together with practical exposure to the fundamental techniques of design, including drafting, the preparation of lighting plots, costume rendering, and special techniques for theatrical communication.This is a two-semester course. When you select it you will be registered in 35-3211 in the Fall and 35-3212 in the Winter semester. A grade will not be assigned to 35-3211 until 35-3212 has been completed.

35-322 Technical Production I. F,W(2-3)

An application of classroom theory to projects in theatre crafts. Students will serve in technical capacities on a production. Students will normally serve in different capacities in35-322 and 35-323.

35-323 Technical Production II F,W(2-3)

An application of classroom theory to projects in theatre crafts. Students will serve in technical capacities on a production. Students will normally serve in different capacities in 35-322 and 35-323.

Prerequisites: 35-322.

35-324 Theatrical Organization F(3-0)

A study of various models of theatrical organization such as board and management structures, production management, technical direction, and stage management, together with their implications for theatrical production. This course may, but need not include practical work on productions, at the discretion of the instructor.

Prerequisites: 35-105, 35-222.

35-332 Applied Criticism of Drama and Theatre W(3-0)

This course is designed to engage students in critical practice as applied to theatrical production.

Prerequisites: 35-105, (1 of 35-100, 35-208, 35-222, 37-210, 37-2111).

35-3331/2 Canadian Drama and Theatre F(3-0)/W(3-0)

A study of Canadian drama, theatre and theatre history, focusing on plays, theatre companies and productions of selected periods and the theatrical and cultural conditions that shaped them. This is a two-semester course. When you select it you will be registered in 35-3331 in the Fall and 35-3332 in the Winter semester. A grade will not be assigned in 35-3331 until 35-3332 has been completed.

35-342 Special Studies in Production II F,W(2-3)

A continuation of 35-341. Students will serve in different capacities in 35-341 and 35-342. Admission is by interview only.

Prerequisites: 35-341.

35-353 Canadian Film F(2-3)

This course is designed to give the student knowledge and understanding of Canadian film and film makers.

Prerequisites: 35-150.

35-355 Theories of Drama and Theatre F(3-0)

A study of theoretical approaches to the study of drama and theatre.

Prerequisites: 35-105, 35-230 or at least 2 course credits in dramatic literature.

35-360 Directed Readings and Special Independent Studies (3-0)

Independent study based upon bibliographies established in consultation with the instructor. An essay normally will constitute the written requirement for the course. Tutoring and/or consultation will be arranged, depending on the topic or materials for study. Special studies may also be arranged in the practical aspects of the theatre, with appropriate assignments, not leading to a production. Projects for this course are subject to the approval of the department, and must be submitted to the chair, on forms provided by the department, no later than the last day of classes in the semester prior to enrolment in the course.

Prerequisites: 6 drama course credits, including 35-105, 35-230.

35-361 Directed Readings and Special Independent Studies (3-0)

Same as 35-360.

35-362 Special Studies Seminar F(3-0)

A seminar course that provides for intensive study of a specific aspect of drama and/or theatre. Admission is by interview only.

Prerequisites: 6 drama course credits, including 35-105, 35-230.

35-363 Special Studies Seminar F(3-0)

Same as 35-362

Prerequisites: 35-362.

35-370 Fundamentals of Directing F,W(2-3)

A study of the basic theories of directing, complemented by practical in-class directing exercises.

Prerequisites: 35-105, 35-208.

35-395 Drama in London W(2-4)

A course designed for students taking the London Semester consisting of a study of theatre events in London, through attending performances, reading texts and meeting for weekly seminars.

35-408 Special Studies in Acting F(0-5)

A studio course in acting for experienced students. Admission is by audition/interview only.

Prerequisites: 35-311 or equivalent.

35-409 Directing F,W(3-2

The application of the fundamentals of directing through the direction of a one-act play. Admission is by interview only.

Prerequisites: 35-370.

35-421 Scenography W(2-3)

An integrated studio course in scenographic concepts and techniques for the theatre. Admission is by submission of a portfolio and interview only.

Prerequisites: 35-3211/2.

35-425 Honours Project in Theatrical Production S,F,W(0-6)

The completion, under direction, of a project in acting, directing, dramaturgy, or design and technical theatre. Students will work in different capacities in 35-425, 35-426. Admission is by interview, audition, or submission of a portfolio, as appropriate.

Prerequisites: 1 of 35-305, 35-311, 35-3211/2, 35-322, 35-370 as appropriate.

35-426 Honours Project in Theatrical Production S,F,W(0-6)

The completion, under direction, of a project in acting, directing, dramaturgy, or design and technical theatre. Students will work in different capacities in 35-425, 35-426. Admission is by interview, audition, or submission of a portfolio, as appropriate.

Prerequisites: 35-425.

35-430 Seminar in Theatre History F(3-0)

A study in depth of one aspect or period of theatre history or historiography.

Prerequisites: 35-3021/2.

35-431 Seminar in Theory of Drama and Theatre F(3-0)

A study in depth of one aspect of dramatic or theatrical theory of criticism.

Prerequisites: 35-355, 35-332.

35-432 Seminar in Dramatic Literature W(3-0)

A study in depth of one aspect of dramatic literature.

Prerequisites: 35-3021/2/2 or 35-355 or35-332.

35-433 Seminar in Canadian Drama and Theatre W(3-0)

A study in depth of one aspect of Canadian drama and theatre.

Prerequisites: 35-3331/2.

35-434 Seminar in Playwriting W(3-0)

A study of the theory and practice of playwriting. Admission is by consent of instructor and may be based on an interview and/or submission of a written sample.

35-465 Honours Essay (3-0)

The completion, under direction, of a scholarly essay in the study of drama and/or theatre. Admission is by interview only.

Prerequisites: At least 2 course credits at the 300-level or above in dramatic literature, theory, or theatre history.
