French Studies

Department of French Studies

The department reserves the right to determine the appropriate level to be taken by students enroling in language courses. Students registering in these courses will be expected to have the appropriate language proficiency.

Literary texts are, at all levels, studies in the original language. Students registering in these courses will be expected to have the appropriate language proficiency.

44-109 Basic French S,F,W(3-0)

A basic course in French grammar and reading for students who have up to Ontario Grade 9 French (or equivalent) but not above. 44-109 cannot be counted toward a specialization in French. Francophones and French immersion students will not be admitted to this course. Offered through distance education only.

44-110 Elementary French I W(3-1)

A beginning course in French grammar, oral and written skills for students with minimal knowledge of French grammar (Ontario Grades 10 and 11 or equivalent). 44-110 cannot be counted toward a specialization in French. Francophones and French immersion students will not normally be admitted to this course.

44-111 Elementary French II W(3-1)

A review course in French grammar, oral and written skills for students with some knowledge of French (Ontario grades 12 and 13 or equivalent). Students with OAC French or equivalent will not be allowed to register in this course. 44-111 cannot be counted toward a specialization in French. Francophones and French immersion students will not be admitted to this course.

44-120 French Language I S,F,W(3-1)

Practice in written and oral French.

Prerequisites: 44-111 or 1 French OAC or permission of the department. Francophones and French immersion students will not normally be admitted to this course.

44-202 France: Literature and Society F,W(3-1)

An historical introduction to French life and thought as seen through literature and art. Lectures and small seminars are integrated into a multi-media presentation including videotapes, slides and audio tapes.

Prerequisites: 44-120 or 44-203,

44-203 French Language II S,F,W(3-1)

Further practice in written and oral French. Grammar, vocabulary acquisition, translation, laboratory exercises. Discussion groups.

Prerequisites: 44-120.

44-206 Quebec: Literature and Society F,W(2-2)

An historical introduction to Quebec life and thought from New France to the present as seen through literature and art. Lectures and small seminars are integrated into a multi-media presentation including videotapes, slides and audio tapes.

Prerequisites: 44-120 or 44-203.

44-210 Quebec and the Quebecois F(3-0)

An analysis of various facets of contemporary Quebecois and Franco-Canadian culture including: a history of Quebec song; aspects of Quebec nationalism; the major painters of Quebec; language legislation in Canada; the francophone minorities outside Quebec.

Prerequisites: 44-120.

44-230 France and the French W(3-0)

A study, through various media, of the social, political and economic aspects of contemporary France. A seminar and lecture course.

Prerequisites: 44-120.

44-250 French Translation I W(3-0)

An introduction to the art and techniques of French-English translation.

Prerequisites: 44-203.

44-252 French Composition I F(3-0)

Essay writing and textual analysis.

Prerequisites: 44-203.

44-300 Romanticism and Realism in France F(3-0)

A seminar on the 19th-century novel emphasizing themes and ideas which have contributed to contemporary literature and thought.

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-301 Modern Times and Beyond W(3-0)

A changing world as perceived by 20th-century writers from France. From Proust to Deconstruction, the impact of renewed scientific perspectives on literature, and the questioning of modes of representation, signs and society.

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-302 Modern French Theatre F(3-0)

Twentieth-century drama: Sartre, Beckett, Ionesco and more recent dramatists. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

44-304 Thinkers and Moralists F(3-0)

Seventeenth-century prose: the mirror of Society in the Age of Reason. A seminar and lecture course. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

44-305 Eighteenth-Century Theatre W(3-0)

Evolution of dramatic theory and practice to reflect the rise of the bourgeoisie; new themes in comedy and tragedy. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

44-307 Enlightenment and Crisis F(3-0)

Prose literature in the 18th century; the questioning of traditional values. The road to revolution.

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-315 French Children's Literature F(3-0)

A study of children's literature in the francophone world from the 17th century to the present.

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-320 Quebec Novel W(3-0)

A survey of representative Quebec novels from World War II to the Quiet Revolution. A seminar and lecture course.

Prerequisites: 44-203,44-206.

44-321 Quebec Theatre W(3-0)

A survey of recent trends in Quebec drama and readings from representative works by Quebcois playwrights. A seminar and lecture course. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

44-323 The Structure of French F(3-0)

Elements of the sound system, grammar and vocabulary of contemporary French.

Prerequisites: 44-203.

44-324 French Classicism W(3-0)

Human destiny in 17th-century drama.

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-325 Québec Poetry W(3-0)

A survey of the major currents in recent Quebecois poetry. A seminar and lecture course. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

44-329 Black Francophone Literature W(3-0)

An introduction to black Francophone writers of the 20th century through the study of selected works. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-330 to 44-339 Perspectives of French and Quebecois Literature S,F,W(3-0)

Treatment of a certain theme or area of interest such as: regionalism, feminism, France and Quebec in the world, politics and polemics, popular literature in France,and Quebec humour. Content will vary from semester to semester.

Prerequisites: (44-202 or 44-206), 44-203.

44-350 French Translation II F(3-0)

Contrastive grammar (French and English). Analysis of various styles and their application to written translation. Small discussion groups.

44-352 French Composition II W(3-0)

A course similar to 44-252 with special emphasis on stylistics.

Prerequisites: 44-20344-252.

44-353 Administrative and Commercial French F(3-0)

This course is a detailed study of the French language as it is currently used in administration and business, both in France and Quebec. It will cover areas such as advertising, administrative reports, employment, communication and levels of language.

Prerequisites: 44-203.
Exclusions: 44-253.

44-356 Contemporary French Women's Writings W(3-0)

A study of the main trends in women's writings and feminist criticism in contemporary France.

Prerequisites: 44-202,44-203.

44-361 to 44-369 Studies in French Literature and Culture in Nice F,W(3-0)

Thematic courses relating to the literature, arts, and society of metropolitan France and of the Francophone world. Options may include other languages, literatures, and other disciplines in the arts and social sciences. For Nice students only.

Prerequisites: 44-202 or 44-206), 44-203.

44-399 Francais Avance F(3-0)

An advanced study of the French language, normally for students of native ability, e.g. Francophones and bilingual students. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: Permission of the department. Translation of the description: "Etude du francais au niveau superieur. Cours reserve normalement aux etudiant(e)s francophones ou bilingues."

44-404 Medieval France F(3-0)

An introductory course in medieval French language and literature. The broad outlines of the Middle Ages in France. Grammatical and literary analysis of selected texts. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

44-421 Recent Quebec Fiction F(3-0)

An analysis of representative contemporary Quebecois novels from one or more critical points of view, e.g. aesthetic, thematic and/or ideological approaches; techniques of the novel. Choice of titles and methodology will vary from year to year. A seminar and lecture course. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

44-430 The Poet as Visionary W(3-0)

The French Symbolists of the 19th century. The 20th century Surrealist poets' vision of the world. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

44-450 The French Language in Canada F(3-1)

A descriptive, historical and socio-linguistic study of the varieties of French spoken in Canada, with particular emphasis on the French language in Quebec.

Prerequisites: 44-203, 44-323.

44-452 Comparative Stylistics W(3-0)

A contrastive analysis of French and English stylistic resources, with application to English-French translation. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 44-203, 44-250,44-350.

44-460 to 44-465 Honours Seminar in French and Quebecois Studies S,F,W(3-0)

Seminar on literary genres, movements and themes.

Prerequisites: (44-202 or 44-206), 44-203, 44-352.

44-474 Research Paper in French Studies I S,F,W(3-0)

A research paper in French on an approved topic in French literature or language. Individual tuition will be given on methods of research and techniques of writing. This course will be the equivalent of a semester course and is intended to serve as an introduction to future research at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels.

44-477 Research Paper in French Studies II S,F,W(3-0)

44-478 History of the French Language W(3-0)

The development of French from Vulgar Latin to contemporary French.

Prerequisites: 44-323, 44-323.

44-480 The French Renaissance F(3-0)

An introductory course on French 16th-century literature. The broad outlines of the Renaissance and the Reformation in France. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 44-202, 44-203, 44-352.

44-490 Applied Linguistics: French Studies W(3-0)

A course specially designed for future teachers of French, in which the principles of linguistics are applied to the teaching of French. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 44-203, (44-323 or 62-100), or permission of the department.
