61-110 Preliminary Latin I F(3-0)

A beginning course in Latin providing the fundamentals of structure and grammar. (This course may not be taken by anyone who has OAC Latin).

61-111 Preliminary Latin II W(3-0)

A continuation of 61-110.

Prerequisites: 61-110 or Year 4 (Grade 12) Latin.

61-200 Latin Literature F(3-0)

A course in Latin literature based on relevant texts.

Prerequisites: OAC Latin or 61-111.

61-215 Latin Lyric Poetry W(3-0)

Rise of lyric forms in Latin poetry; 'personal' lyrics of Catullus; public and philosophical lyrics of Horace; influence on later Latin poetry. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 61-200.

61-216 The Roman Moral Tradition F(3-0)

A consideration of texts that examine the concepts of duty, piety, goodness and happiness. The course shows what is distinctive about Roman treatments of issues first raised by Greek thinkers. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 61-200.

61-217 The Roman Epic Tradition W(3-0)

A study of epic poetry at Rome, emphasizing Virgil's heroic Aeneid but including readings from other epics such as Lucan's Pharsalia and Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica. (Offered in odd-numbered years.).

Prerequisites: 61-200.

61-225 Latin Epistolary Literature F(3-0)

The art of letter-writing as it was practised by three of Rome's public men, Cicero, Seneca, and Pliny; the different styles of different types of letters; later influence of the art of letter-writing. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 61-200.

61-226 Roman Oratory and Rhetoric F(3-0)

A study of the theory and practice of Roman oratory with readings of selected speeches and rhetorical writings. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: 61-200.

61-315 Elegy and Eros W(3-0)

A critical and historical survey of erotic and elegiac poetry: Catullus, Horace, Ovid, Propertius, and Tibullus. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: two 200-level Latin courses.

61-316 Didactic Literature W(3-0)

Poetry as mode of instruction: Lucretius, Virgil and their Greek antecedents. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: two 200-level course credits in Latin.

61-325 Roman Historiography W(3-0)

A study of Roman historical writings, with selected readings from Sallust, Livy, and Tacitus. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: two 200-level course credits in Latin.

61-352 to 61-357 Themes in Latin Literature F,W(3-0)

The content of Themes in Latin Literature will vary from semester to semester. Each semester offering will concentrate on a particular theme, e.g., Poet and Public at Rome, Satiric Elements in Latin Literature, The Roman Experience in Poetry, Greek influence on Latin Literature, etc..

Prerequisites: two 200 level course credits in Latin.

61-410 Directed Readings in Latin Literature F(3-0)

A reading course in Latin Literature designed according to the needs and the interests of the individual student. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Prerequisites: three 300 level course credits in Latin.

61-415 Research Paper: Latin F,W(3-0)

A major essay on an area of study to be determined in consultation with the department. This course is restricted to students enrolled in an honours program in Latin.
